Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney was substituted during the second half of the 4-0 victory over Stoke at Old Trafford this afternoon with a suspected groin injury.
Darren Fletcher, Ryan Giggs, a Danny Higginbotham own goal and a Ji-Sung Park header handed the Red Devils the win, although Chelseas 8-0 hammering of Wigan meant that Alex Fergusons side relinquish the title.
Rooney was replaced midway through the second half of the match, and was clearly in discomfort from what has been revealed to be a groin injury.
The extent of the damage is not yet known, but it will be worrying for England coach Fabio Capello with the World Cup in South Africa kicking off in just over a months time.
Rooney has suffered from a difficult few months as the season came to an end, missing a number of key matches, but it was thought that he had overcome any complaints to be fit for the showpiece event in June.
But Capello has been left sweating over the fitness of his top striker, and if the injury is a serious one, it has the potential to send Englands preparations for the tournament into disarray.
