The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Communication Bitange Ndemo has said that Social Media sites in the country will stay on.
Ndemo said that sites such as Facebook and Twitter will not be switched off by the government despite the increasing incidences of hate speech following the March 4 general elections.
Ndemo has reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining freedom of expression, but has clearly stated that those found to be propagating hate speech and incitement will be prosecuted.
The PS has however said that the ministry is facing the challenge of fully dealing with the negative ethnicity as some users of the platforms are not registers with their real names.
The PS's remarks follow those of National Cohesion and Integration Commission chairman Mzalendo Kibunjia who said the commission is facing difficulty in stemming hate speech on social media since the administrators of the site are situated outside the country.
