Disgruntled members of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC) have named Mosiuoa Lekota, the former defence minister, the president of their new party, the Congress of the People (Cope).
The announcement was made at a rally in Bloemfontein, South Africa's judicial capital, on Tuesday.
Thousands of supporters gathered in Bloemfontein to mark the party's formal launch, a move seen as the biggest challenge to the ruling ANC party since it came to power at the end of the apartheid era in 1994.
