The country would quickly be able to build a basic device from plutonium with a similar technology to the “Fat Man” bomb.

With no time to build and run the large facilities required to enrich uranium, wartime Ukraine would have to rely instead on using plutonium extracted from spent fuel rods taken from Ukraine’s nuclear reactors.

Ukraine has denied claims of developing nuclear weapons.

“Ukraine adheres to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons; we neither possess, develop, nor intend to create nuclear weapons,” emphasized Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Earlier, The Times reported, citing documents allegedly prepared for Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense, that Ukraine could create a “rudimentary nuclear weapon” within a few months if the U.S. reduces military aid.

The report mentioned the possibility of a plutonium bomb using technology similar to the “Fat Man” bomb dropped on Nagasaki by the U.S. in 1945. However, President Zelensky has repeatedly stated that Ukraine seeks NATO membership, not the return of nuclear weapons.
 
France has announced it will send six Mirage 2000-5F multipurpose fighters to Ukraine at the start of 2025, doubling the initial plan of three fighters. Additionally, by the end of 2024, France is set to deliver a total of 600 AASM (Armement Air-Sol Modulaire) precision-guided bombs to Ukraine. To support this, the French Ministry of Defense will boost production with a target of manufacturing 1,200 AASM bombs by 2025, ensuring Ukraine’s munitions supplies are maintained and replenished.
