Dude, I am very familiar with the criticisms against the GDP calculations and i honestly agree with most of them. But I disagree with u dismissing it as a mere "paper economy", and that it doesnt really reflect the true living standards of the pipo.
The GDP providess quite a reliable results about the goods and services produced by by the pipo in a given country within a given period, and how it has all impacted on the living standards of the population of the country: i.e some evident growth in the household incomes, the pipo's expenditures and what amount of the goods and services have been consumed by the pipo within the given period.
That then proves that it does reflect on the quality of life of the pipo despite its flaws. It does depict the reality on the ground.
I hope that u and Eliakeem realize that the 'P' in that initial stands for 'PRODUCT", referring to the pipo's efforts to produce goods and services to help satiate their needs and those of the others.

Yes, it's true... we first need a decent/great GDP (economic growth ) which eventually defines the level of per capita GDP! A steady economic growth/GDP with a steady optimal allocation of resources (usually over a long time) will in turn bring about economic development which defines the welfare of the society!

Economic development has no DIRECT relationship with country's population size though it's also true that small population size makes it easy to attain above goals!

But when there's no direct effect/relationship between a country's population size and the development/people's wellbeing; on the other hand there's DIRECT relationship between country's population and its per capita GDP keeping GDP constant.

Look, even Eliakeem's example about Sweden and Norway is purely based on development but your example for Botswana and probably Equitoria Guinea is again focusing on economic growth with most famous indicators; GDP and per capita GDP!

As I said above, we don't ignore GDP and per capita GDP because in the Long Run will bring about economic development but IF AND ONLY IF there will be an optimal resource allocation or else the country will continue recording higher GDP and higher per capita GDP but the wellbeing of the people remains to be poor which again is the answer of your Capital "P" stuff in GDP!!

That Capital P (Product and services) may be produced by very few people but affecting the country's total figure of P and GDP per capita! For instance, due to land scarcity in Kenya (large part being owned by few landlords) 10,000,000 MT Tones of coffee can be produced by only 5 farmers and affecting overall Kenyan GDP while only half of it can be produced by 1,000,000 MT farmers in Tanzania because there's an abundant land. And though Kenya and Tanzania both have similar population size; the impact of 5,000,000 MT of Tanzania's produced coffee is much positive compared to 10,000,000 MT produced in Kenya because Tanzania has better optimal land allocation compared to Kenya.
