Title: Strategies to Curb Global Warming in Tanzania.

Introduction:

The United Nations (UN) 17 sustainable development goals (SDGs) which in September 2015 were agreed by world leaders aim at creating better world to live by everybody. Ending poverty, inequality and to address climate change are the cross-cutting issues for the SDGs. This requires everyone to make all efforts to ensure that SDGs are met in each country. These SDGs are inter linked to each other. The SDGs mainly address human population growth, positive living and empower people to solve the problems facing the world (1).

In January 2016, the Tanzania government adopted and integrated the UN SDGs strategies into its National development frameworks- policy, budget, planning. The Tanzania SDGsframework is actively supported by the statistical office under vice president`s office (2).

The natural cause of global warming includes volcanic eruption, fluctuation in solar radiation, small change of global orbit (3).But men made activities like deforestation, burning and industrial processes are the most cause of global warming (3).Rich industrialized countries are responsible for the largest percentage of global emission of carbon dioxide gas (3).

To reduce global warming, we need all countries to collaborativeactions for global warming reduction. But in Tanzania to reduce global warming there should be integration of activities against global warming into the existing primary health care committees at the National, ward and village levels.

The world SDGs include (4):
1) No Poverty: Access to basic human needs of health, education, sanitation.
2) Zero Hunger: Providing food and humanitarian relief, establishing sustainable food production.
3) Good Health and Wellbeing: Better, more accessible health systems to increase life-expectancy.
4) Quality Education: Inclusive education to enable upward social mobility and end poverty.
5) Gender Equality: Education regardless of gender, advancement of equality laws, fairer representation of women.
6) Clean Water and Sanitation: Improving access for billions of people who lack these basic facilities.
7) Affordable and Clean Energy: Access to renewable, safe and widely available energy sources for all.
8) Decent Work and Economic Growth: Creating jobs for all to improve living standards, providing sustainable economic growth.
9) Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure: Generating employment and income through innovation.
10) Reduced Inequalities: Reducing income and other inequalities, within and between countries.
11) Sustainable Cities and Communities: Making cities safe, inclusive, resilient and sustainable.
12) Responsible Consumption and Production: Reversing current consumption trends and promoting a more sustainable future.
13) Climate Action: Regulating and reducing emissions and promoting renewable energy.
14) Life Below Water: Conservation, promoting marine diversity and regulating fishing practices.
15) Life on Land: Reversing man-made deforestation and desertification to sustain all life on earth.
16) Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: Inclusive societies, strong institutions and equal access to justice.
17) Partnerships for the Goals: Revitalize strong global partnerships for sustainable development.

In this article, I will discuss and advice our government on SDG 13: Climate action. I am going to discuss on how to reducecarbon dioxide gas emission and hence restoring ozone layer. In order for the strategies to combat global warming in Tanzania to be effective implemented and sustainable, the curriculum for community health workers (CHWs) should consist topics for global warming so that the CHWs will then provide health education on global warming during their day to day community-based service provision.

Discussion on strategies to curb global warming in Tanzania.

Background:

Global warming refers to the rise in global temperatures due mainly to the increasing concentrations of carbon dioxide gas(greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere. Climate change refers to the increasing changes in the measures of climate including precipitation, temperature, and wind patterns (5). Climate change affects all regions around the world. In some regions, extreme weather events and rainfall are becoming more common while others are experiencing more extreme heat and droughts(5). The world is now warming faster than at any point in recorded history. Warmer temperatures over time are changing weather patterns and disrupting the usual balance of nature. Carbon dioxide is a natural gas which in normal amounts in atmospheric air is important for daily life. The carbon dioxide gas emission which results from human activities like deforestation, burning is the main cause of climate change. The carbon dioxide gas is produced daily during burning fuels, transportation, deforestation, industrial processes (6).

Effects of global warming:
Extreme heat and poor air quality increase complications from underlying heart and respiratory conditions like asthma, renal failure, and pre-term birth; extreme rainfall and droughts (7).

Actions producing more carbon dioxide (8):
1) Burning fossil fuels like oil, coal.
2) Transportation whereby the vehicles emit harmful gases.
3) Industrial processes.
4) Deforestation: trees absorb carbon dioxide so cutting them down disturbs the natural balance.

Approaches to reduce global warming, Tanzania:
1) At individual/family level: Use of environmentally friendly energy sources, reducing and recycle of waste. Encourage people to Use public transport.
2) At community/National level: Incorporation of global warming issues into the existing primary health care committees in all level of government administration.
3) At ministry of regional administration and local government level: To ensure that there is functional primary health care committees at every level of government administration.
4) Encourage every district to establish bylaws to plant trees and make some rules against people burning the forests.
5) At ministry of education level: To ensure part time forestry personnel to teach about basics forestry (including coastal trees) and global warming at primary and secondary schools.
6) At ministry of environment under vice president office: To establish and monitor strategies to reduce carbon dioxide gas emission. Improve forestry management- do not cut down trees.
7) Involvement of religious leaders in advocating to followers(Christians/Muslims) to plant a certain number of trees in his/her area.
8) Advocating for every village through CHWs & community leaders to plant trees. The newly planted trees should be monitored for its growth by the ward and village health committee members.
