Rainwater harvesting has been practiced for centuries for different usage like house hold, irrigation and cattle. At semi arid areas shortage of water during dry season is a recurring problem. This challenge is made worse due to climate change which causes the change of weather patterns which made difficult the availability of water resources. In Tanzania to some places which are semi arid this problem is noticeable, hence requiring creative approaches to the management and storage of water.

In semi arid areas like Monduli in Tanzania, a lack of water has a major effect on food security and availability. For many rural areas agriculture and livestock keeping is the main source of food and income. Therefore a steady water supply is essential. Water scarcity reduces crop production, damages livestock and disturb overall communities overall food security. Furthermore the situation is made worse by variation of rainfall brought on by climate change. Forecast for crops and other water demanding activities can be affected by changes in wet season, which makes it challenging for farmers to plan ahead and maintain their agricultural practices.

The solution in the fight of water scarcity is the storage of harvested water. Surface or runoff water can be harvested and stored during rain season and used during dry season which will guarantee the availability of water for irrigation and living stock hence stabilize food production and maintain financial stability.

Community can become more adoptable to climate change by implementing efficient water storage system. Thus, in semi-arid areas, harvesting water through suitable storage technologies can be crucial to improve food security and economic stability.

Storing harvested water is a critical approach for addressing water scarcity throughout the rain season and can be used during dry season ensuring water availability and supply for irrigation and cattle. Effective water storage systems can reduce the negative impact of rainfall changes, make communities more adoptable to climate change.

Water resources engineers can help on assessing reliable areas for surface rainwater harvesting in semi-arid areas.
