Tanzania acquires device to monitor mobile service abuse
The Tanzanian government has purchased a device to control the misuse of mobile phones and crime, which is to be installed upon completion of certain procedures.
Deputy Minister for Communication, Science and Technology January Makamba said that the government had purchased a modern central equipment identity register which would help control misuse of mobile phones.
He said the device, named the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR), would be linked with mobile phone companies, the Daily News reported.
The equipment is sophisticated enough to track conversations and switch off a mobile phone without the knowledge of the users, he added.
Makamba said the equipment would not be used until all the mobile companies had purchased and installed similar devices.
