Tanzania August inflation rises to 6.6 pct
Wed Sep 15, 2010

DAR ES SALAAM, Sept 15 (Reuters) - Tanzania's year-on-year inflation rate TZCPIY=ECI rose to 6.6 percent in August from 6.3 percent in July thanks to higher food and energy prices, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said on Wednesday.

The NBS said food prices, which make up 55.9 percent of the consumer price basket, rose 0.8 percent in August from July while the overall consumer price index rose 0.7 percent from a month earlier.

Year-on-year food prices were up by 6.3 percent compared with 5.6 percent in July. Energy and water prices jumped 16.5 percent over the 12 months.

Non-food inflation however slowed to 7.1 percent in August from 7.4 percent a month earlier.

Tanzanian inflation has generally eased since the beginning of the year. August's increase is the first since April. (Reporting by Fumbuka Ng'wanakilala; Editing by Richard Lough and Patrick Graham)
