Mpanda — JENNIFA Leonard (17) who just completed Standard Seven in Mpanda District, Katavi Region this year, has committed suicide after learning that she had failed the final examination while her younger sister, Jacquiline passed.

The deceased was a finalist at Shanwe Primary School in Mpanda township. She got an average total of 'D' mark after scoring 'C' in Kiswahili,' D' in English, Maarifa 'D,' Mathematics 'D' and Science 'D.'

Her sister Jacquiline passed with 'D' in Kiswahili, English 'D', Maarifa 'C,' Mathematics 'C' and Science 'C.'

Her total average score was 'C.' According to a close relative, Jennifa took her own life on Thursday evening for explanation that she felt shy that a younger sister passed, while she was not chosen to join form one.

According to the family elder brother, Masumbuko Leonard, Jennifa took unspecified amount of drugs and used kerosene to swallow the pills.

He said on her fateful day the deceased and her young sister, Jacquiline William were at home when a former classmate arrived to inform them that the results were out and Jacquiline had passed while Jenifa failed.

It was further alleged that the deceased could not believe what she heard, then decided to rush and read the results to satisfy herself. She found that it was true that she had failed and her young sister had passed.

"She was in serious psychological pain and agony such that when she came back to the house she told her younger sister, Jacquline that she felt shy for being the elder sister but failed.

She told her that she would commit suicide and wished Jacquiline the best of luck in her further studies as they would not meet again on earth," Masumbuko explained. It was at that juncture that the poor girl entered the room where her mother sleeps and grabbed an assortment of drugs and swallowed them using kerosine.

She then returned where her young sister was and told her the whole sad story, but Jacquiline could not believe what she said.

She thought her elder sister was joking. According to Masumbuko, Jennifa collapsed in front of her younger sister who quickly called neighbours to assist and was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Katavi Regional Police Commander (RPC), Dhahiri Kidavashari confirmed the incident, but pledged to give details on the matter after completion of police investigation.

The traumatised parents of Jennifa could make no comments as the incident sent shocking waves in the entire neighbourhood.

The body of Jennifa is preserved at Mpanda Hospital mortuary pending funeral arrangements.
