As a long time strategy in facilitating development of the Information Technology (IT) sector in the country, the government of Tanzania starts to implement the decision of building own major data centers.

This project mentioned in the e-Government Strategy publication of September, 2012. As per plan the first data center expected to be built in 2017 but considering the demand and priority the implementation comes early more than expected, to have the very first government facility of this nature by the end of 2015.

During the event of Huawei Cloud Conference 2015 which took place on 18th June, 2015 at Julius Nyerere International Convention Center, Dar es Salaam, the Government of Tanzania through the Ministry of Communication, Science and Technology signed the Memorandum of Understanding(MoU) with Huawei Technology Co, Limited to become among the potential partner is supplying devices for the data centers project.

Minister of Information Technology and Communication Hon. Makame Mbawala highlighted several measures and success the government achieved in facilitating the development of IT sector within the country. In congratulating Huawei after MoU signing the minister also pointed other Chinese company ZTE Corporation, that will work together with the government as the second partner in the same project.

Huawei Technologies Co, Ltd is the close Tanzanian government partner in Technology. The company work hand in hand with the government in building the National ICT backbone which expected to reach 20,000 Kilometres of fiber by end of 2015 comparing to the neighbour countries which currently struggle with around 4,000 Kilometres

In pointing out security as among the mojor concern in IT industry, Minister Mbawala encouraged local companies to hosts their data in the expected government owned data centers once the project is complete instead of hosting them in other countries.

"Bring all your data home, they are not that much safe abroad. With your own Government they will be safe and I promise affordable service subscription fee"- Hon. Mbawala

The minister also demanded for more support from private companies in several key projects which will fasten improvements in the IT sector as a spearhead for social and economic development.

He appraised efforts done by Huawei in supporting The Nelson Mandela University of Science and Technology of Arusha as well as the collaboration with private telecommunication companies in building National ICT backbone infrastructure reaching last mile remote areas after phase II of the project.
