Tanzania: Neeke Wins Professional Volleyball Stint in Kenya
By Mbonile Burton
Tanzania's volleyball ace, David Neeke has secured a team in the Kenyan professional league, making him the first Tanzanian to play volleyball at the professional level.
The success comes a month after the player attended month-long trials in the Kenyan capital. Neeke left the country last month for trials hoping to sign a professional career contract with one of the top Kenyan teams and now his dream has come true.
He told the 'Daily News' from Nairobi yesterday that everything went well and that he will be serving a Cooperative Bank team which features in the Kenyan Professional League.
"Thank to God everything went well, I have already secured a team, but I have to wait until the end of this year to start the preparations," he said. According to him the next league season is scheduled to start in February 2017.
"Currently the Kenyan League is about to reach a playoff stage that involves four teams that finished at top of the table," he said. He said that Co-operative Bank is among the seven top teams that have been fighting for a place in playoff stage as the Kenyan league approaches its climax. Neeke said that he will join his team's training session soon after the end of the league.
The former Jeshi Stars player, Neeke recently told the 'Daily News' that he aims to go far in the sport as he understands Kenya volleyball standard is the highest in the region.
"Kenyan league is more advanced compared to that of Tanzania, their competition level also is high, am sure I will gain a lot by playing in this league next year," he said. Neeke also serves as country's volleyball ambassador in searching of the hidden talents.
He went to Nairobi after helping his team to win the National Club Championship title in the competition held at Filbert Bayi Complex in Coast Region last month. That was the third title for Jeshi Stars this year.
Their first title was Muungano Cup they clinched after winning the tournament held in Zanzibar in May and the second title was the Dar es Salaam League held in August this year.
