The Serengeti ecosystem is a geographical region in Africa. It is located in north Tanzania and extends to south-western Kenya between latitudes 1 and 3 S and longitudes 34 and 36 E. It spans some 30,000 km2 (12,000 sq mi).
The Serengeti hosts the largest mammal migration in the world, which is one of the ten natural travel wonders of the world.[1]
The region contains several national parks and game reserves. Serengeti is derived from the Maasai language, Maa; specifically, "Serengit" meaning "Endless Plains".
Approximately 70 larger mammal and some 500 avifauna species are found there. This high diversity in terms of species is a function of diverse habitats ranging from riverine forests, swamps, kopjes, grasslands and woodlands.[4] Blue Wildebeests, gazelles, zebras and buffalos are some of the commonly found large mammals in the region

For all the Four Seasons Hotels loyalists out there (you know who you are, especially you Josh Flagg) in search of a Four Seasons in the wild, you'll be thrilled to know that the posh hotel brand now has a hotel in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania.
Four Seasons has just signed a management agreement with the owners of the existing Bilila Lodge (previously a Kempinski.) The resort will be upgraded and rebranded the Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti in fall 2012. This marks the first Four Seasons in Sub-Saharan Africa, although the brand is planning a luxury tented safari camp in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area and a beach resort on the island of Zanzibar.
This particular Four Seasons will borrow heavily from the popular Four Seasons Tented Camp Golden Triangle in Thailand by allowing guests to spy on wildlife (mainly elephants) in a safe and "ecologically responsible" environment yet while still having all the luxury amenities and necessities they can't travel without.
All 60 rooms, 12 suites and five villas on the property have direct views of the Serengeti and a two-storey great house serves as the heart of the resort with several dining options, a spa and an infinity pool. There's no word yet on whether or not you will still be able to watch wildlife while getting a massage.Right now, we can't seem to find rates on the Bilila Lodge's website which is still functioning. Horses - There is a herd of 18 horses consisting of the South African Boerperd, an indigenous African breed, Thoroughbreds and a variety of cross breeds ranging from 15hh to 17hh. Our horses are selected carefully for their temperament and comfortable paces. They are well schooled and of a very high standard.
Tack - The tack is all top quality leather and riders can choose between English, Western or South African trail saddles.
Singita Explore and 3 to 8 day Safari Rides - Let us create your horse safari itinerary up to 8 days riding between Sasakwa Lodge, Singita Explore and Singita Faru Faru Lodge. Led by experienced guides, the riding pace is moderate to fast and up to 6 hours riding per day.
Required Ability - Riders must be able to control their horses at all paces over variable terrain.
Maximum Weight - 220Lbs/ 100Kg. We do have a few bigger horses and riders over this weight can discuss riding options with the Equestrian team.
Age - 14 and over. We may take younger riders depending on their experience and ability. Parents of younger riders can discuss riding options with the Equestrian team.
Riding equipment - We have the following riding equipment for your use: Breeches, Jodhpur boots, gloves, full and half length chaps, riding hats and back supports.
