Kenya ports Authority (KPA) will today officially open a liaison office in Kigali to act as a link between Rwandan shippers and the Port of Mombasa, East Africa’s biggest gateway to global markets.
In a statement issued yesterday, KPA said the new office located at the Grand Pension Plaza will “cater for the business community in the transit market in Rwanda, routing their cargo through the Mombasa port.”
KPA has over the last few years been working to improve the flow of cargo through Mombasa amid complaints by importers of delays in cargo clearing destined for landlocked countries of Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi.KPA opens office in Rwanda

– In a move to facilitate and expand regional trade, the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) has opened an office in Burundi’s capital, Bujumbura, to improve service delivery and expedite
cargo flow along the Northern Corridor.
Speaking during the launch, KPA Chairman Danson Mungatana said the Burundi business community can now use the liaison office to raise any issues regarding their cargo without having to travel all the way to Mombasa.
“Cargo to Burundi through the Mombasa Port has been growing rapidly. For instance, cargo volumes grew by 84 percent last year underlining increased confidence by Burundi government and business community in the port,” Mungatana said.
The ceremony was presided over by
Cabinet Secretary for Transport and Infrastructure Michael Kamau and his Burundi counterpart Diometra Ruruwinza.

“We are launching a new program to train qualified Burundians at the KPA Bandari College. This will help improve service delivery along the Northern Corridor as the regional economy grows,” said Mungatana.
The Northern Corridor is the transport and trade route that serves Uganda, Northern Tanzania, Eastern DRC, Rwanda and Burundi from the port of Mombasa.
In July last year the authority also opened another liaison office in Kigali, Rwanda to serve the growing market.

The business community in Rwanda too were previously forced to travel Kenya to clear their good and sort out any grievances, which is currently not the case.
The landlocked regional states uses the port of Mombasa as their main artery to bring in goods with imports growing by an average of 9 percent annually.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) will use its newly launched Representative Office in Kigali as a launch-pad into Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The move comes as the Mombasa port seeks to defend its position as the region’s favourite shipment centre after reforms at the Dar es Salaam port threatened to tilt traders’ preferences in favour of the latter.
Despite political unrest in the mineral rich eastern DRC, cargo at the Mombasa port bound to the central African nation has increased significantly, surpassing what goes to Burundi and Rwanda.
Now the port looks set to cash in on this growth with KPA opening a representative office in Kigali to bring services closer to traders from landlocked countries.
With an office in Kigali, traders in Rwanda, Burundi and Eastern DRC will now pay and clear their cargo in Rwanda, saving them time spent in Mombasa

Eti mko mbioni kummeza Uganda mzima mzima.... Dude! Uganda wanachukua 7-10million tonnes kila mwaka kupitia Msa port out of 28 million tonnes. .. Dar port hupitisha 16 million tonnes total, hata tukiwaachia mmeze mzima mzima mtanyongwa koo mmfe bure.
