The Tanzania Bureau of Standards (TBS) impounded a container with substandard condoms of different lots known as’ Melt Me’ imported from India.
Speaking to reporters yesterday in Dar es Salaam, the TBS acting Director General Leandri Kinabo, said the container with condoms whose price was given as $138,815(over 160m/-) was impounded by the agency in collaboration with police at the Dar es Salaam Port in August.
“These condoms were found to be substandard when tested and were not allowed to enter in the market since that would not be good for people’s health,” he said.
Currently the consignment is under procedure of being re-exported to the country of origin and various government departments are working to prosecute the dealers, he said.
However during surveillance carried in Dar es Salaam this week TBS found that there are other four different lots of ‘Melt Me’ condoms in the market which were not inspected and approved by the agency.
TBS inspectors bought samples to test them and found that they are not fit for use, since all allowed air, water and had damaged seal.
Kinabo alerted public not to use ‘Melt Me’ brand of condoms available in the market as all lots tested were substandard. Furthermore no suppliers or distributers of those condoms were allowed to supply or sell ‘Melt Me’ condom brand in the local market.
He said TBS is impounding all those lots and is working with the police to establish how the consignments got into the country “and those found selling the brand will help us.”
"I urge Tanzanians to use always TBS certified or approved products for the betterment of their health and avoid unnecessary problems," he said.
Currently TBS has approved four brands of condoms namely Salama, Salama bomba, Dume and Blue Denim.
The TBS Act no 2 of 2009 and its regulations state that condoms imported into the country must conform to the relevant standard sh632:2006 (revised) ISO 4074 2002 textiles natural latex rubber condoms.
The standard falls under category of compulsory standards, therefore condoms manufacturers or importers are required to abide by the certification procedures for their products.
Contrary to this procedure, legal action will be taken against any manufacturer who defaults as per stated regulations, he emphasized.
Section 27(1) of the Standards Act provides that where a person contravenes any of the provisions of the act for which no specific penalty is provided, commits an offence and on conviction shall be liable to imprisonment for not less than two years or a fine not less than sh 50m and not exceeding sh 100m or both.
