Tanzania bails out EAC

Zephania Ubwani

Arusha

Tanzania has injected $2m (about Shs4b) to the cash-strapped East African Community as the secretariat came under fire from the regional legislators of its handling of the budget matters.

The secretary general, Mr Juma Mwapachu, told the East African Legislative Assembly, whose sitting nearly aborted because of the cash crisis, that the money was transferred to EAC account through the Bank of Tanzania on Wednesday.

He added that Rwanda had also promised to remit some $1m (about Shs2b) to the secretariat as part of its budgetary contributions as well as its obligations to salvage the EAC.

He said besides Tanzania and Rwanda, other member states have promised to remit their budgetary contributions, other countries have started to settle their outstanding payments to run the EAC secretariat.

My Take:
I think we Tanzanians know that we are rich, but like to think we are poor or we are poor people who pretend to be rich!!.. or I don't know!

Mkulu M.M.M! Kwa mtazamo wangu we are very RICH! ila ndio kama ujuavyo, KUPANGA NI KUCHAGUA... kwi! kwi! kwi!

We are not rich....tuachane kudanganyana!
And we are not poor or indigent either...

We are Miafrika Ndivyo Tulivyo...(does it make sense?)

We are rich bwana how could we afford the controversial radar, ndege ya raisi, scandalous EPA payments, exempting scandalous local govt expenditures and yet life was at its normal course (The bongo way anywayz)

Bravo!

But I can't belive my eyes and ears.

We are rich, Tanzania is a blessed country in terms of natural resources, fertile land and tourist sites.

Kiufupi hatuna 'UONGOZI BORA' Ndio maana we are POOR;although we have a lot of resources

kama sisi ni maskini utajiri wetu basi ni wa nini hadi tuweze kuafford to lose over a billion US dollars in 10 years and life continue unimpacted?

Tanzania plans to build a 400 megawatt coal-fired power plant by 2012 at a cost of $1.2 billion, the chairman of state-run National Development Corporation was quoted saying on Thursday.

Tanzania suffered serious power cuts in 2006 after drought slashed hydropower production, making the need to diversify to other electricity sources more urgent.

NDC intends to build the plant near two coal deposits in southwestern Tanzania and is working through Tancoal Energy Limited, a joint venture with Pacific Corporation East Africa, a subsidiary of Australia's Atomic Resources Ltd <ATQ.AX>.

NDC and Pacific Corporation signed a deal last year to develop the Ngaka and Muhukuru coal fields and Tancoal agreed to commit no less than $500,000 for exploration and completion of a pre-feasibility study and due diligence.

"This project will only take four years to be completed since its inception in 2008," NDC Chairman Chrisant Mzindakaya was quoted saying in privately-run Guardian newspaper.

According to Atomic Resources' website, the two deposits have a potential of between 110 million tonnes and 150 million tonnes of coal. The company is also involved in uranium exploration and has other operations in Western Australia.

Tancoal's director, Peter Tsegas, said the company was awaiting permission to proceed with the project.

State-run Daily News quoted Tsegas as saying the project would cost $1.2 billion. No further details were available on how the money would be raised. Neither Tancoal nor NDC officials were immediately available to comment.

State-run Tanzania Electric Supply Company has an installed capacity of 1,212 MW, of which 562 MW is from hydro-power dams. But this is not all regularly available, partly due to intermittent rain.

The east African economy of about 40 million people also generates more than 280 MW of power from natural gas, and plans to boost this by about 545 MW by 2012.

Tanesco said late last year it needed to add 70 MW annually to the grid to meet demand, which is expected to surpass 1,100 MW by 2010. (Reporting by George Obulutsa; Editing by David Clarke and Keiron Henderson).

My Take:

We are still rich!!!

Hahaha ndivyo tulivyo...Rich or poor?
Mimi nadhani we are rich lakini we cant utilize our wealth for the benefit of many pamoja na ufisadi uliojikita kwenye grey area btn mahusiano ya serikali, wafadhili na wananchi.

Thanks Mkjj. Tanzania siyo maskini kabisa!!!!

Of course we are rich, very rich! but there are some fisadis who don't want to see the rest of Tanzanian wana neeemeka na urich wa TZ

Siku nyingine unanifurahisha kweli maana huuweka ukada wako pembeni na kuweka maslahi ya nchi mbele. Hongera.
