The coronavirus epidemic in the UK appears to be starting to slow down as a result of the social distancing measures brought in by Government, a scientist advising Number 10 has said.
Professor Neil Ferguson, of Imperial College London, said: "If we look at the numbers of new hospital admissions, that does appear to be slowing down a bit now. It has not yet plateaued, so still the numbers can be increasing each day but the rate of that increase has slowed."
It came as the UK was warned that it faces a six-month wait before life returns to normal following lockdown, which began last week.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump has extended the initial 15-day coronavirus shutdown in the US as the death toll from the virus hit 2,400.
