There was once a king so cruel, he taxed his people unfairly and threw anyone who disagreed with him in jail. His subjects wished he would disappear! Then one day he surprised them all. "No more cruelty! No more injustice!" he promised. And he kept his word. The people started calling him The Gentle Monarch.

Months later, one of his ministers asked him, "Your Majesty, what changed your heart?" The King answered, "As I was galloping through my forests, I saw a fox being chased by a hound. The fox got away, but the hound bit its leg, hurting it bad. Later, I saw that same hound barking at a hunter.

The man got mad and broke the hound's leg! But the hunter didn't get far before a horse kicked him, leaving him lying in the dirt, unable to walk. Seeing that hurt hound, I felt a chill. It was like I was watching myself - hurting others, only to be hurt in turn. So, I decided to change." The minister listened but thought, "The King is weak now, full of silly stories about foxes and hounds.

Now is my chance!" He rushed off to plan how he could be king, but as he was walking, he tripped on the steps and sprained his ankle. He lay there groaning, his dreams of power suddenly much harder to reach.
