Happy new year 2013 to all:

Did you know we learn more by being good listeners than by being good speakers? Did you also know that in most schools we are taught how to speak and read but not how to listen? Listening is one among the communication skills that has been forgotten; get some insight about it below.

Listening
Listening is the communication skill that is most often overlooked. Listening is paying attention to what someone is saying. A good listener hears the message being conveyed and evaluates its meaning. Good listening is a form of learning because it reveals knowledge to others. Hearing what is being said but not concentrating on what it means is called passive listening. In contrast, active listening means hearing what is being said and interpreting its message as well. Active listening makes you a more effective communicator because you react to what you have heard.
As you planning your career, you will find active listening to be helpful in many ways .Listening to business and personal acquaintances may lead you to a new contact. Listening to how someone talks about a company can tell you a lot about how the company is run and the morale of the employees.
Good listening skills include being able to distinguish important from unimportant information, to detect inconsistencies in information, and to understand the main point of the message. When parts of a message are unclear, the best thing to do is to take notes, jot down your questions, and wait until the entire presentation is or discussion is finished. It may also be appropriate to provide comments about what was presented or to provide feedback on what was said and how it was said.
Remember that many times we have difficulty listening to what is being said because we are distracted by things bothering us or by the environment around us. Another distraction can be our own emotions about what is being presented or about the speaker. The key to overcoming these distractions is concentration. By developing basic communication skills, you will become more confident in yourself and more effective in your interaction with others.
