VIP reception thrills US world-fame golfer Nicklaus
THE famous retired American golfer Jack Nicklaus and his family, who started a 10-day tourist visit to Tanzania on Wednesday, said on arrival in Dar es Salaam that they were overjoyed by the reception and hospitality of Tanzanians.
The golfer was received by the Deputy Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Japhet Hasunga and top officials of the Tanzania Tourist Board (TTB).
“I have heard about many tourist attractions of this country, but this is my first time to be in Tanzania. We have been thrilled by the reception we have received from government and board officials.
I know I am in safe hands and I hope I will see with my own eyes all those things I am told they are found here,” the relaxed golfer told his hosts and reporters.
He said besides visiting tourist attractions, he will visit Dodoma Region and contribute to a water project that is overseen by his German friend. “I have been told that there is severe scarcity of potable water in that city. I will contribute to the mitigation of that problem, Nicklaus pledged.
Deputy Minister Hasunga thanked the golfer for coming, asked him to feel at home and assured him and his family of a safe and enjoyable stay in Tanzania.
He said the visit of Nicklaus was proof to the fact that Tanzania was succeeding in advertising herself to the global tourism population.
Hasunga told reporters that Tanzania applauded the golfer’s action to choose Tanzania for the tourist visit.
“Tanzania, the home of Kilimanjaro and unmatched world fame attractions like Serengeti, is happy to host Nicklaus and his family.
The visitors will see the beauty of our country. We hope Nicklaus will be our tourism ambassador when he returns home,” he said.
He said the government has bought airplanes in a deliberate move to ferry tourists to foreign countries and modernise Tanzania’s tourist business.
TTB Director General Devota Mdachi said TTB has actually asked the golfer to be Tanzania’s tourist ambassador in the US.
“Our guests will be here for more than ten days. We shall make sure they see everything they wish to see. We shall meet their wishes faithfully,” she promised.
During his hay days golfer Nicklaus, nick-named Golden Bear, won 117 awards, making him a very important and rich person in the world. Nicklaus has promised to invest in Tanzania.
Ordinarily Tanzania does not publicise private visits of world prominent people who visit local tourist attractions, if the visitors ask for private tranquil visits. This month retired US President Barrack Obama had an 8-day private restful visit to local tourist attractions before leaving for Kenya on July 15.
The Swiss President, Alain Berset is also in the country for a private tranquil visit since July 10, 2018.
