[h=1]Lobby seeks to block ODM leader Raila Odinga in 2017[/h] Updated Friday, September 13th 2013 at 13:38 GMT +3 By Abigael Sum

A lobby group has launched a change-the-constitution campaign that could block former Prime Minister Raila Odinga from the next presidential elections.

In the proposed amendments, the National Movement for Democracy Advancement ( NMDA) wants all the heads of the three arms of government namely the Executive, Legislature and Judiciary to retire at the age of 70.

If the proposal is adopted, it would mean that Raila, who is highly expected to take another shot on the presidency in 2017, will not be eligible to vie as he will be 72 years old.

Harmonise law

“This is a call for harmonisation of the Constitution because it is unfair to have only the head of the Judiciary retiring at the age of 70 and exclude the President and the Speaker,” said Njiru Kimaru, NMDA Convener.

Age limit

He added: “This not to discriminate anyone from contesting the presidency but there should be an age limit because there is no rationale for them not to retire at the same time. The public service has an age limit; it is only logical for the Executive and the Legislature to have an age limit as well.”

The lobby group states that since over 70 per cent of Kenya’s population fall in the youth bracket, the presidency should reflect the age group of the majority.

NMDA are calling for an amendment to have a one 10-year presidential term to allow for uninterrupted running of government and development and protect Kenya from the constant campaign mode.

The group also wants the decision to withdraw from the Rome Statute be subjected to a referendum.

The group said the referendum should covers other emerging issues arising out of challenges met during the implementation of the Constitution.

Ahahahaha....kaaz kwer kwer!

Labda hawakushinda kihalali.....labda.....

After Assassination of Prof Saitoti, Uhuru now blocks Raila and he will be for life President

Someone wants to use a referendum to settle scores, when the tide turns against him sasa ni balaa; do you guys have one track minds?

If kenyans won't come out from from their hangovers of tribalism, that country is gone, the worst is yet to come.

This hate you guys have for the man is beyond fathoming. Lord have mercy!!

Ha ha ha
Mie nilikuwa naangalia tu, eti katiba mzuri. Ha ha ha, na Sahizi huku bongo nako wanapigania katiba wakidhani ndo mwarobaini. Katiba bila nidhamu ni bure tu. Katiba kitu gani bwana, kitu ambacho mtu anaweza kutaka kubadirisha vifungu hata iliyopo bado haijawa-implemented kikamirifu.

Tatizo la sisi waafrika tunatatizo la msingi ambalo halikuwa addressed, kwa kweli.

Hao ni tribal goons ambao wao kila kukicha wanamuona mtu flani kama threat ndani ya jamii yao..wenzao wanataka wabadilishe vifungu pesa ishuke chini kwa wananchi wao wamekazana kuplan jinsi ya kumzuia mtu mmoja asigombee urais, hata majina yao yanaonyesha wanatokea jamii ipi.ukabila is the order of the day huko kwenu.

Somebody needs to tell Ruto to look at the graffiti on the wall...it reads " I was here before and the called me Njamba- Raila"

I agree, ulinifunza kuvuta bangi ukidhani haitanidhuru?

Good thing is that you agree to your maladay...which I believe is not because of 'bangi' but because your tribal blinders cloud your reasoning....and there are a lot of your kind on this forum.

Fell free to decorate it the way you want but punda hata upake rangi bado ni punda sio pundamilia, Rao is the only one who can be viewed from a tribal angle i guess.

You are trying real hard but everybody knows the biggest tribalists in Kenya are Kikuyus!..thats a fact that is in the history books for all to see. Kenyatta's government marginalised the whole country with their buffonery and gluttony that left the other tribes as mere servants. Then came Kibaki who perfected it and now this tin god of yours is simply carrying on the sins of his father.

You can hate them but that's your problem, i have never been interested in knowing your tribal background for its not important to me but your post in black and white shows how anti-tribalist you are.

I wouldn't look at it that way, it is all about political competition by both sides. This will go on until the next poll with each side trying to outdo or silence the other. I believe this is health. I don't believe one bit that Raila will actually be barred from contesting the next poll. This will be suicidal and a recipe for chaos. For now if Raila advocates for a referendum to change the law the other side must quickly come up with a counter measure to balance the equation. It is this simple. No one will be hurt so let the rest of us watch from the sidelines until the next poll after which we pass judgement on the ballot. All are our leaders.

So basically this is just the usual politicking that goes on from one election cycle to the next election cycle?

I hate to say this but Kenya is walking on very dangerous grounds right now only because of the
sycophancy I see coming from the Mpigs. When I saw how easy it is fr them to be swayed by
Uhuru Kenyatta's money (which is rumored to be more than the Kenya Government, but that is a
story for another day) I shuddered! This sounds like the the Moi days (the richest man is Kenya
I believe right now) where once the drums rolling you best believe it will come to pass.

If this BS gains momnetum, what would stop some Jubilee MP from bringing a motion in Parliament
to put a clause in the Constitution that puts the age limit at 70? With Uhuru's money flying around
the motion will pass 'with an overwhelming' vote without a doubt. We saw what happened with the
ill advised ICC pullout motion. By the way that would be all legal in the first place. Just like in the
Moi days when he was questioned about his excesses like detention without trial, all he said is the
Constitution allowed him and if it didn't he would whip up his boys like Kariuki Chotara and Bargetuny
Ezekiel to go around the country whipping up emotions and next thing you know, the Constitution would
be changed to 'suit the mood of the people'.

Therein lies my fear bwana Koborer,

That stupid Parliament!
