unlikely, call it a technical mishap on the choppers side but lets wait for the official KDF/UPDF communique on the matter. Lets hope for the best. Alshbaabs capacity inside Kenya is zero, suicide missions are their new modus operandi.

Habari za saa hizi Livefire, you are right I don't think Al-Shabaab have means/capability of bringing down a flying TANK - Technical mishap on the choppers could be the most likely culprit.

Kenyan intelligence and military were aware
of the flight path to be used by the Ugandan
who were about to deploy the airforce
gunship helicopters in Somalia.
The Mil Mi-24 (NATO reporting name: Hind)
is a large, heavy helicopter gunship and
attack helicopter and 8-troop capacity war
craft produced by Mil Moscow Helicopter
Plant and operated since 1972 by the Soviet
Air Force.
Uganda had acquired Mil-24 Hinds most of
which were unserviceable but later
contracted Russian experts to refurbish
them at Soroti Flying School.
UPDF-AMISOM has been in Somalia for more
than half a decade and has struggled to
make headway outside the Mogadishu
corridor successfully.

I suspect the Russian "experts" contracted to refurbish choppers may have done it shoddly!!

Read the stuff alright, it says 'army reserves' does it mean young men sent to SOMALIA by G.O.U are not regular SOLDIERS!!!
 
KAMPALA (Reuters) – A number of Ugandan
military helicopters went missing in Kenyan
airspace on Sunday on their way to Somalia
to reinforce African Union peacekeeping
forces battling al Shabaab rebels, the
Ugandan military said.
The military told Reuters that a team of
helicopters had left a base in the Ugandan
city of Entebbe but only one had landed in
the Kenyan town of Wajir, where they were
scheduled to refuel before flying on to
Somalia.
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF)
said they had no details about what had
happened to the rest of the helicopters.
They did not say how many were missing or
how many people were on board.
“The search is going on, we don’t know
what exactly happened but we are
investigating it and we will let you know
when I get adequate information,” said Felix
Kulayigye, UPDF spokesman.
Ugandan troops form the backbone of the
African Union peacekeeping force (AMISOM)
in Somalia. The air force said on August7
that it was deploying transport and combat
helicopters into Somalia to beef up the force.
The AU force, which also comprises of
Kenyan and Burundian soldiers, is planning
an onslaught on Kismayu, Somalia’s second
biggest city, which is a hub for the al Qaeda-
linked al Shabaab Islamist militants, before
August 20.
Weakened by internal divisions and financial
constraints, the rebels have surrendered
territory in Mogadishu, central and southern
Somalia where they are also battling
Ethiopian forces.
A U.S.-backed plan calls for Somalia to
establish a legitimate government accepted
by fractious clans and a new parliament and
constituent assembly to replace institutions
plagued by corruption and infighting.
The National Constituent Assembly, sitting in
Mogadishu early this month, approved a
provisional constitution to replace an 8-
year-old Transitional Federal Charter and
lead to the end of the transition process on
August 20, when the mandate of the U.N.-
backed government expires.

i am not well versed with Ugandan military formations but they have one distinct battalion, UGABAG6 trained by the USA and deployed wholly in somalia, mayb they now have a new crop of soldiers. I presume this batch is what formed the bulk 3K plus soldiers. About ''reserve force'', i really dont know what the colonel was alluding to....maybe surplus soldiers yet to be deployed.
 
Two of the missing Ugandan attack
helicopters which went off the radar on
Sunday as they flew to Somalia to shore up
the final attack on the port city of Kismayu
have been sighted after crash.
Kenya's Police spokesman Eric Kiraithe said
in brief statement: "one has been sighted on
Mt Kenya and another in Meru area." We are
still trying to find out finer details of the
crash and the search and rescue missions
are on-going."
The choppers three are said to have gone
missing within Kenyan airspace as they flew
to Somalia, a source said.
A search on the three MI-23, which
disappeared was concentrated near Mt
Kenya while a fourth one landed in Wajir,
initial reports said.
The Kenya Defence Forces officials
confirmed the incident but referred
journalists to the police saying the incident
was a homeland matter.
“It's true an incident happened on the
choppers but talk to the police or Ugandans
themselves. The matter is more of a
homeland,” said a senior military officer
who asked not to be named.
Kiraithe asked for more time to get detailed
information on the incidents before making
a full statement on the circumstances.
It is not yet clear on what happened to the
helicopters. The choppers were apparently
headed for Baidoa in Somalia.
The Uganda People's Defence Forces (UPDF)
said a team of helicopters had left a base in

he he...brother u are not giving me much insight, do u know sth i dont as partaining to UPDF deployment in somalia? Date of deployment and any unit aside UGABAG6 (specialised brigade)?
