The Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC) has received for consideration 227 project proposals on various investments, the Parliament has been told.
Responding to a basic question by Hamad Rashid Mohamed (Wawi-CUF) State Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office (Investment and Empowerment) Dr Mary Nagu said out of the proposals submitted 135 had been indicated to be under the PPP arrangement.
The MP had wanted to know the number of investment projects by type currently being processed by the TIC through the public-private-partnership (PPP) and those, which are private.
She said there were about 29 proposals on generation and supply of electricity, six on railway transportation, 17 on rehabilitation and construction of airports and nine on the construction and rehabilitation of ports.
Dr Nagu said 10 proposals were on agriculture, nine on infrastructure, seven on special economic zones and 48 on local governments.
The minister noted that the private sector alone presented 92 proposals – four on industrial sector, 38 on agriculture, 13 on mining, 32 on tourism, two on education and three on trade.
Dr Nagu stressed the importance of following procedures. “There are rules and regulations set by the government. In order to help prospective investors, we have also established the PPP Financing Unit in the Ministry of Finance since last year and the PPP- Coordination Unit at the TIC in February this year,” she said.
The minister explained that the units would facilitate a critical analysis of project proposals suggested under the PPP arrangement by conducting feasibility studies and fiscal risk assessments.
