Dar es Salaam, 2nd September, 2014. Tigo Tanzania announced today that it will distribute a staggering 14.25 billion shillings (equivalent to US $8.7M) of profits accumulated on the Tigo Pesa Trust Account, to millions of users, making it the first telecom company in the world to share its Trust Account profit, through mobile money.
The Tigo Pesa Trust is an account where all the funds from Tigo Pesa users have been deposited since its mobile money operations started almost four years ago. Tigo is now in a position to distribute these profits, following the approval from the Bank of Tanzania (BOT) in a letter of Non-Objection granted this July.
Tigos General Manager Diego Gutierrez said that the disbursement of this profit will benefit all stakeholders of Tigo Pesa, which include its super agents, retail agents and consumers in general.
For the past three and a half years the Tigo Pesa Trust has been accumulating returns at rates between 5 and 12 per cent which had reached a value of 14.25 billion shillings by June this year. The objective of this dividend is to offer all Tigo Pesa stakeholders an opportunity to share in this return on their investment depending on the e-value they have stored in their Tigo Pesa wallets, said Gutierrez.
He added, The average return which a stakeholder could receive varies based on their average daily balance in their e-wallet; either as a super-agent, retail agent or customer.
Tigo expects that these dividends will benefit over 3.5 million Tigo Pesa users in the country, including the super and retail agents who form an integral part of the mobile money services network in Tanzania.
Apart from the US $100 million dollars which we promised and continue to invest yearly as part of our network enhancement and expansion program in the country, this new Tigo Pesa Trust dividend scheme will be a direct investment into the lives of all Tanzanians, because it will boost their income and their social-economic well-being as a whole. It is an expression of the companys continuing commitment to support economic and financial inclusion in Tanzania by extending the use of Tigo Pesa across the country, said Gutierrez.
