A university: According to The Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary (7[SUP]th[/SUP] Ed) is an institution at the highest level of education where you can study for a degree or do a research. Mwl. J. K. Nyerere defined university as "an institution of higher learning; a place where people's minds are trained for clear thinking, for independent thinking, for analysis, and for problem solving at the highest level.
According to J. K. Nyerere, a university has three major important social functions. From one generation to the next it transmits advanced knowledge, so that this can serve either as a basis of action, or as a spring-board for further research. Second, a university provides a centre for the attempt to advance the frontiers of knowledge; it does this by concentrating in one place some of the most intellectually able people who are not pre occupied by day-to-day administrative or professional responsibilities, and through its possession of good library and laboratory facilities. And third, a university provides, through its teaching, for the high-level manpower needs of the society"
