What is the next big threat to the Serengeti?

Serengeti Watch is asking: Is Tourism the Next Big Threat to the Serengeti? Here’s why it may be.

Tourism impacts need to be mitigated by responsible practices

Dear Serengeti Watcher,

Below are two recent, disturbing tourism incidents. Currently there is no way to know how widespread such problems are, so we’re beginning to compile a report. If you’ve ever experienced or witnessed tourism related issues in the Serengeti or Mara, please let us know.

A Traveler’s Report

"About 50 safari vehicles came to our side of the river.

The herd had three points to go down to the river relatively easy. They tried the farthest point from us, but even there so many vehicles frightened the herd. So the animals searched for another location.

When the drivers saw this, they began driving like race cars, putting themselves and their passengers in danger.

In the process, one killed a zebra!

The drivers were out of control and I thought that if they had weapons, they would try to kill each other. It was frightening. Our driver tried to speak with them but the answer he got was, "Who are you to tell us what to do?"

When we finally came to the river, I saw the last female come out exhausted from the water with her young calf. She was frightened by vehicles parked to close to each other. She turned back to the water. I hope that she found another place to come up safely."

Safari Vehicle Accident

Below is a photo of an even more recent incident across the border in Kenya. A driver rushed to the river to get ahead of the herd and other vehicles, recklessly careening down the bank! Luckily, no passengers were hurt.

How Much Tourism is Too Much?

In a recent report the World Bank advised Tanzania that it could increase tourism eightfold over present numbers! They said this can be done by diverting more tourists to less frequented parks and reserve. Possibly. But tourism has the potential to destroy what it seeks to protect. What do you think?

Again, thank you for your continued support!

A TREAT? How are they a TREAT? Do they carry medicine that when they get an accident the wildlife feeds on?

Geza, you have no difference with those drivers that caused the accidents..... yaani you are willing to do anything just to get back at kenya.... if people started killing each other on the tanzanian side of the border and the blood or smell crossing into the kenyan side made tourist not come to the kenyan side, I bet you'll still be celebrating kenyas misfortune,

". but the story that led to the writing of the article originated from the serengeti... but you were too blind to see that, as long as kenya was shown in bad light, it dint matter who else was in the same light

When it comes to vehicles modification no one beats Kenya's creativity and ability in East Africa. So whatever Geeza is trying to insinuate here is not only stupid but embarrassingly insulting.
I live in Uganda and i see mini buses assembled by KVM every day.
FACT: A Kenyan will never import his car to take it across the border for modification
FACT: No Tanzanian is courageous enough to open up a business to compete with the genius creatives in Kenya inside Kenya.
So Geza Ulole STFU you have no idea what you are talking about.

Arusha Firm Manufactures, Exports Special Vehicles
Posted on : Saturday , 23rd May 2015

Arusha — TANZANIA has started manufacturing special cars and going to the extent of exporting them to as far as South Africa and Europe.

The Arusha-based factory, Hanspaul Automechs Limited, which fabricates specially designed 'Safari' vehicles, has started exporting its products, popularly known as 'War Buses' to the neighbouring country of Kenya, South-Africa and European countries.

Vice-President, Dr Mohamed Gharib Bilal, recently presented the company with, not one but two 'Presidential Manufacturer of the Year' awards, issued annually by the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI), this being the first time that Hanspaul won the accolade.

Group Managing Director, Mr Satbir Hanspaul, expressed gratitude to the CTI and the government of Tanzania for recognising efforts of his company.

Hanspaul Automech Limited, which manufacture the war buses won in the 'Metal and Metal Works' category while its sister company, Hanspaul & Sons Limited scooped the award in 'Building and Construction' category.

"Many people will not believe that countries that have car-making factories such as South Africa and those in Europe are now being compelled to buy vehicles from Tanzania, but they are doing just that," said Mr Satbir.

He explained that the specially designed 'War Bus' structures remain to be Tanzanian innovation which other countries find interesting, that is why they keep ordering the safari trucks from Arusha.

"And to make sure that some clever persons out there do not imitate the fabrications, we change the designs and specifications every two or three months so that whatever comes out of our factory lines remain innovative, fresh and out of reach," boasted the HAL company director.

Previously Toyota Motors Company of Japan recognised Hanspaul Automechs Limited (HAL) as preferred Conversion Company permitted to build the so-called 'war buses' Winnebago models on top of its Land-Cruiser series 70 chassis.

The elongated safari vehicles whose idea was hatched in Arusha have now become an international sensation such that many countries have started ordering them from Tanzania.

While Kenya, Uganda and South Africa import the 'War Buses' from Arusha to use as their Safari vehicles to ferry tourists into national parks, overseas countries are reportedly buying the specially designed trucks to be used in the armed forces there.

Depending on preference, Hanspaul Automechs, which operates from the Industrial Area of Themi Hills (Njiro), manufacture the 'war buses' on Toyota, Nissan and Land-Rover frames. The works are done with specially automated robotic machines inside factory lines that look like any other vehicle manufacturing set up in Japan.

Group Chief Executive, Mr Kamaljit Hanspaul, who founded the company explained that key to its success was the firm's adherence to quality and dedication to innovations.

HAL assembly lines can produce between 30 and 35 'war buses' in a month but the factory manufacture the Winnebago models by order. "Our market is highly dependent on the tourism industry but this year 2015 has started slowly due to the industry slump," stated Mr Hanspaul.

Interesting conversation in here.

Those Safari vehicles have been converted by Hanspaul Automechs Limited (HAL), an Arusha based company.

Its true that HAL export her products to several African countries including Kenya, South Africa and as far as Europe. You can check their website below:
