TRA confiscates one tonne of sugar, 10 cartons of cooking oil
THE Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has again confiscated one tonne of sugar, 10 cartons of cooking oil and the vehicle that was used to transport the goods illegally into the country through Namanga in Arusha along the border with Kenya.
The customs manager for Namanga border Edwin Iwato said the products were seized on Sunday night in a Nissan Caravan property of Christian Nko which was also confiscated together with the products.
“We have arrested another businessman by the name Paul Swai who was transporting products into the country through illegal routes.
The TRA official said one tonne of the sugar is worth 2.2ml/- and the cooking oil is worth 520,000/- .
According to TRA, the owner of the vehicle and the driver will be dealt with as per custom laws and that after inspection the products were identified as fit for human consumption saying they will be distributed to various needy government institutions.
This is the second time this month for TRA to seize and confiscate various products from Kenya which were being smuggled into the country illegally.
Some two weeks ago, TRA seized and nationalised various commodities at the same border.
The commodities were imported in Tanzania via illegal routes in Namanga border from neighbouring country of Kenya.
The confiscated commodities and products include one tonne of sugar and salt, 18 bags of tea, 16kg of khats, 5000 chicks and 416 boxes of eggs.
