The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has revealed relative growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of Sh45.5trn in the first half of the callender year compared to Sh39trn in the corresponding period last year.
The NBS Director of Economics Statistics Directorate Morrice Oyuke told reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, that if the trend is not tainted by the economic shock GDP may exceed the Sh89trn estimates by the year-end.
He said the GDP forecast for the second quarter at the current prices in absolute terms was Sh23.6trn compared to Sh20.4trn as recorded in the same period last year.
Economic growth by activity showed that agricultural sector registered growth rate of 4.2 per cent in the second quarter this year as opposed to 3.8 per cent in the corresponding period last year.
He attributed the growth to favourable rains for crop production in major producing regions in 2014/15 agricultural year and proper livestock products monitoring in markets.
According to the statisticians, during the period under review, the quantity of maize harvested increased from 1.59 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2014 to 1.64million tonnes in the second quarter of 2015.
Paddy harvested therefore increased from 0.79 million tonnes in the second quarter of 2014 to 0.86 million tonnes in the corresponding quarter this year. Beans harvested increased from 262,000 tonnes in 2014 to 280,000 tonnes in 2015.
It was further exposed that mining and quarrying activity recorded a growth rate of 8.3 per cent in the second quarter of 2015 compared to 6.4 per cent in the similar quarter last year.
Tanzania also saw an increase in gold production of 10,682kgs in the second quarter of this year compared to 9,917kgs produced in the corresponding quarter last year. While diamond production during the second quarter this year amounted to 52,928 carats, it was 50,277 carats in the corresponding period last year.
The released statement also revealed that copper production in the second quarter this year increased to 3,854,30kgs compared to 3,686,401kgs in the corresponding quarter last year.
"Manufactures also recorded a growth rate of 6.9 per cent in the second quarter compared to 10.1 per cent in the second quarter of 2014," read the statement that attributed the growth to general increase in the production of industrial goods.
It also stated that noticeable increase was realized from non-food industries including textiles and wearing apparel, chemical products, furniture, rubber and plastic products.
Electricity and Water increased by a growth rate of 5.3 per cent in the second quarter this year, compared to 2 per cent in the corresponding period last year owing to an increase in electricity generated from hydro, thermal and gas plants.
The power generated during the period amounted to 1,588.1million kwh compared to 1, 489.0 million kwh produced in the same period in 2014.
Construction activities that include residential and non-residential buildings, roads, bridges and other civil works recorded a growth rate of 13.2 per cent in the second quarter compared to 37.5 per cent last year.
