Kabaka Ronald Mutebi yesterday said the 47 years of independence being observed today have been laid to waste by unnecessary conflicts. We [Uganda] have spent the 47 years of independence bickering and fighting endlessly which have wrecked development.
This is the time to drop such minds and focus on issues which affect our people, he said.
Citing leaders instigating the secession of chiefdoms in Buganda through divisive politicking, the king warned the perpetrators that they would not be tolerated.
My regime will never consider fighting ethnic battles in this era. We prefer unity for Buganda and Uganda at large, the Kabaka said in his first public address, after holding a maiden crisis meeting with President Museveni in four years, nearly two weeks ago.
New marriage law to break families
A cross section of religious leaders have denounced the proposals in the recent Marriage and Divorce Bill, saying they degrade the role of religion in marriage.
Last week, the Uganda Law Reform Commission introduced a bill to replace the troubled Domestic Relations Bill that included among others, proposals allowing women married to impotent men to divorce them.
It also allows for cohabiting couples to have equal rights to property that they have accumulated while staying together and giving the Minister of Justice powers to determine and licence places where marriages can take place.
