Uganda has started exports through Mombasa port under a seamless regional tax collection scheme, raising hope for faster shipments.

The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) said the country last week began shipping coffee on a PILOT BASIS under the Single Customs Territory (SCT) arrangement — which allows for joint collection of customs taxes by the East African Community (EAC) partners.

This will be followed by tea, hides and skins among other products. The SCT agreement is aimed at enhancing clearance of goods, minimising controls at internal borders and decongesting ports to boost trade facilitation between Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Under the procedure, customs declarations have been reduced from four to one, while cross border export clearance will take a maximum of two hours.
