Uganda is considering legal action against Elon Musk's SpaceX after debris from a SpaceX satellite reportedly landed in western Ugandan villages. Citing Article 7 of the United Nations Outer Space Treaty, which holds launching states liable for damage caused by their space objects, Uganda has until May 2024 to file a formal claim under this treaty.

This incident raises concerns about the growing issue of space debris and its potential impact on Earth. SpaceX's Starlink project, which aims to provide global internet coverage through a large constellation of satellites, has faced criticism for contributing to space junk.

In 2024, SpaceX announced plans to dispose of 100 Starlink satellites due to design flaws, highlighting the challenges of managing defunct satellites. Additionally, the increasing number of satellites has led to a rise in collision-avoidance maneuvers, with Starlink satellites performing nearly 50,000 such maneuvers in a six-month period. The situation underscores the need for stricter regulations and international cooperation to address the environmental and safety concerns associated with space debris.
