Details: Geolocation footage published on 7 September shows that Ukrainian forces had some gains northwest of Klishchiivka in Donetsk Oblast. The Ukrainian General Staff reported that Ukrainian forces had achieved success south of Bakhmut and near the settlements of Robotyne and Verbove in the west of Zaporizhzhia Oblast.

In addition, the geolocation published on 7 September indicates the further advance of Ukrainian troops to the northwest of Verbove in Zaporizhzhia Oblast’s western part.

A well-known Russian milblogger also claimed that Ukrainian forces continued to advance in the area.

The Economist: The head of the US defence intelligence agency, Trent Maul, admits that US and Ukrainian officials failed to assess the depth of Russian defences and how difficult it would be to penetrate them with armoured vehicles.

Maul warns that the bulk of Russian forces and assets remain on the third line of defence. The military official is more diplomatic when it comes to discussing Ukraine's military strategy. "One can debate whether the Ukrainians have used tactics that would allow them to make more serious gains in a shorter period of time. Two critical variables are more important: ammunition stocks and wetter autumn weather," he said.

A Biden administration official believes Ukraine has about six to seven weeks of fighting before the offensive culminates. Some believe the Ukrainian army is unlikely to advance very far. "If you look at the battlefield five years from now, it may still look about the same," said a senior US intelligence official.
