In Summary

  • Ol Karia III was financed by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation at $310 million Sh26.4 billion

Kenya has added 48 megawatts to the national power grid with the completion of the Ol Karia III geothermal plant by Ormat Technologies Inc.

The completion steps up the quest to add 5,000 megawatts to the grid in four years to stabilise power supply and make it more affordable, enhancing the competitiveness of its goods in the market.

“With Plant III online, the complex’s total generation capacity has increased to 110 Megawatts that is sold to Kenya Power under a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA),” Ormat Technologies chief executive Dita Bronicki.

Ol Karia III was financed by the Overseas Private Investment Corporation at $310 million Sh26.4 billion.

Kenya has a potential of 6,000 megawatts of geothermal power.

Last month, Kenya Power ended rationing of electricity saying geothermal power would bridge the gap brought about by low water levels at hydropower dams.

Recently, a global think-tank, Research and Markets urged East African governments to source for funds to develop cheaper and renewable sources of energy like water, wind and geothermal.

Several geothermal projects are ongoing at Ol Karia, Mount Longonot and Menengai Crater where a Chinese company has drilled five wells with a capacity to generate 100 megawatts of electricity.
