Inspectors from the International Atomic Energy Agency, who have been in the country for a week, on Thursday approved Kenya’s application for its first nuclear power station.
The 35,000MW facility is to be built at a cost of Sh950 billion on a 200-acre plot in the Athi Plains, about 50km from Nairobi, and is expected to satisfy all of Kenya’s energy needs until 2040.

The formal agreement is expected to be signed between the IAEA and the government in the next two weeks.

Already the government is in talks with the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA), which will supervise the construction and train technicians and other experts to run the plant.

UKAEA executive director, Prof Attaboy Fakes, flies in next week for consultations with the government committee in charge of the project, chaired by Gender Minister Esther Murugi.

Officials from the Nairobi Metropolitan ministry under which the projects falls told the Nation that the construction of the plant will start early next month and is expected to be completed by September 2012.

“We are hitting the ground running, we have brought in top nuclear engineers from Europe and Asia for the construction work beginning May,” said a top ministry official who declined to be named because she is not the spokesperson.

A 50km shaft will be dug into the ground at Oborimo, Urongo in Kisii Central District to store the nuclear waste.

The management of radioactive waste is one of the greatest problems of nuclear energy. It is stored until such a time in the future when the technology will exist to dispose of it.

Once complete, the nuclear power plant is expected to provide 90 per cent of the country’s electricity needs, making Kenya the world’s biggest consumer of nuclear energy ahead of France which derives 80 per cent of its electricity from nuclear sources and the United States, which obtains only 19 per cent of its electricity from the same.

A debate has been raging globally about the safety of nuclear energy in the wake of the massive earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last month, destroying nuclear reactors at the Fukushima power plant and triggering radiation fears.

The inspectors are expected to certify that Kenya has adhered to all the international conventions on peaceful use of nuclear technology that it has ratified, the official said.

The conventions include the Nuclear Non-proliferation Treaty, IAEA Additional Protocol, Small Quantities Protocol and Comprehensive Safety Agreement.

The world’s chief nuclear inspector, Mr Yukiya Amano was expected in the country on Thursday to attend a United Nations meeting, and possibly for the signing of the agreement with Kenya.

Currently, Kenya has an established power capacity of only 1,296MW. Power consumption is growing at 8 per cent a year and is expected to reach 15,000MW by 2030.

But with the nuclear facility, Kenya will have so much power that it will supply for free to industry.

Kwetu watakuwa wanachukua malighafi tu. (Lakini hii tarehe ya source mbona imekaa a day before siku yetu?).

Yeah we will be only producers of Raw Materials (Uranium) ... It seems there is no one in this Government interested in developing our nations - they just love leadership and trying 2 devide us...

Some of us we still in March my dear african...

TZ NI UMEME WA MAJI TU......MAJI + CORRUPT LEADERS=MGAO MPAKA 2050...... :tape::tape::tape:

Wakileta mradi kama huo watauza lini majenereta yao?

Kenya boasts to have close alliance with the western countries and UN will only endorse such projects provided that they do not pose any political threat to them.

Wadau haka ka button ka kusema thanks kanapatikana wapi? Ninatumia mobile phone ku-post.
Thanks

Ukisema nuclear plant labla miaka kama sita kufika half way operational hivi kabla reactors hazijaanza kumelt and leaking radiactive material.Jamani tusiende huko waacheni wakenya wawe na hayo matatizo. Daaa hata hizo reactors zikiwa huko kenya zikiachia radiactive material pia bongo tutaathirika. Haa tupingeni, hii sio wise move. Hawa watu wa mangaribi wanajitafutia kazi mahali pengine duniani manake huku makwao watu hawatakui tena ma nuclear plants nadhani mmejionea wenyewe huko japani.

Halafu i tell you guys most of these neclear plants and plans ni very old zilikuwa best altenative za kuendesha uchumi kitambo huko magharibi kwa zile nchi ambazo hazina madini kama coal kwa wingi, mdawake unakaribia kuisha na watu wa huko hawazitaki tena. Ndio maana nasisitiza kuna beta sustainable renewable energy sources under development coming and dont get into dirt nuclear power which produce waste material with a decaying period of over 200,000 years. Can you imagine leaving that to your future generation!

Hii ni another plan ya hawa wazungu na watumishi wao kutokolonise na madeni na masheria masheria kufuatilia ambayo wanajua hatutaweza kufuatilia kwa standard zetu duni. alafu kabla hujavuna mazao ya hiyo energy utasikia nuclear taxes on nations with nuclear power plants operating and waste kama unavyo sikia sasa wanataka tulipe carbon tax. Wazungu wabaya yaani wao watumie magariii wee yanayo kulamafuta mengi, ma private planes na maviwanda yao 24/7 alafu sisi tuwalipe carbon tax. Wakati ukikatiza huku Marangu Kilimanjaro kalribu na Kilimanjaro mountain unaona magari machache tuuu na utaweza kuhesabu. Halafu hizo carbon walizo achia hao wazungu zimetuondolea snow kwa mlima wetu. Nasisi tumepolute kiduchu tuu kompea na hao wenzetu wa mangaribi alafu leo wanataka tulipe carbon taxes ukileta nuclea utatakiwa pia ulipe nuclea taxes wee acha.

Umependekeza tutumie coal. Hujataja hizo "sustainable renewable energy no waste material."

Well, coal sio renewable, sio salama, sio safi, sio teknologia mpya, in fact wenzetu wameshafikiria kui phase out kwa sababu ya sumu ya zebaki inayoambatana nayo.

Nimependekeza coal kwavile its within our rich and we have abundant of it even for few decades by then hawa wenzetu wa magharibi watakuwa na hizo renewable energy sources without radioactive wastes. Fusion is one of them wafaransa wameinvest a lot and almost getting result with the pressure now on renewable energies sources and almost the end of usefull of their nuclear reactors in many parts of the world, the solution is closer than ever. we have improvement in solour power panel up to 70% and going up. They have also improved wind power generation in some % and have portable units for some of scandinavian countries operating now. You pot one of the unit in your house and your set,you still need to be connected to tanesco sort for it to work but but can cut you dependency to tanesco up to 60%. this will mean utakuwa na hata kabalbu light and fridge on wenzio wakiendelea na mgao. So my ushauri africans to stay away from nuclear power hawa watu wanataka kutu set up kama kawaida yao. na sasa more problems the world is going under some weather changes and there gonna impose more regulations and fines on us if we take nuclear parth. Don't be fool you have passed UN standards, your peaceful bla….bla.. bla.. Mbona hawakufikiria tungepasi hizo standards 1980's kani sisi tulikuwa magaidi.

hiyo ni April fools prank ndugu zanguni.. sisi bado sana, twapiga ngenga tu

Nimependekeza coal kwavile its within our rich and we have abundant of it even for few decades
Ok, lakini ulipoipigia chapuo coal kwamba Nuclear sio safi ndio ukawa called out, kwamba coal nayo sio safi na salama, ni hatari kwa sababu inaambatana na mercury, a viciously dangerous emission.

Well tukijenga mtambo salama kama uSA tutakuwa salama

lol!!!!

i cant believe u guys fell for it!!!!!!

IT IS APRIL FOOLS JOKE!!!! 35,000MW even the biggest current nuclear plant doesnt produce that much

u guys are complete DIMWITS!!!!!!!!!! :loco::loco::loco:
