"With references from the movie Coming 2 America"
From the movie coming 2 America i have learned that unity between actors, comics and musicians can lead to the making of something big and as in big I mean world class. The likes of Wisley Snipes, Trevor Noah, Eddie Murphy, Luenell, Leslie Jones, Michael Blackson, Rick Ross, Davido, Rotimi and alot more prove that if art meets art and unite as one as a family this leads to something productive. Unlike what happens in my Country Tanzania.
Tanzania artists do the vice versa, we have the beefing and battling mentality. It's never about the love for art any more its about the money, greed and reforms that are unrealistic. Lets take an example, the Standup Comedy world. This is a new thing in Tanzania but enemity has already come in between to the extent people forget about growing comedy.
Example a Tanzanian comic was quoted saying "Even football teams have alot of players that stay on the bench and remain unknown" this is whack because he forgot that in the football world, players are substituted for fresh players, he forgot that players get loaned to other clubs so that they can get more play time and get better then go back to their mother teams and lastly he forgot that even coaches get sucked, and the same can happen in comedy. There is no one who stays Good forever without learning from the experienced and upcoming comics and that is why in the movie Prince Lavelle learned from prince Akeem and also from servant Mirembe.
Most people forget if you use a dying candle to light other candles the dying candle doesn't loose light but adds more light. Others think that if a performers goes in many place to perform they loose their brand, but forget that this is comedy and if you go on stage with new materials everyday no one will ever get used to your materials but if you don't bother writting then you loose your taste as a comedian and your brand dies.
You dont loose your taste as a comedian by perfoming more and more but you become rusty by relaxing and expecting to perform once every month and that is why Princess Meeka kept practicing her fighting art and skills everyday. Do u think if the likes of Eddy Murphy, Trevor Noah and Luenell would be performing once a month they would be the comics we look upto? Do you think the likes of Davido, Rick Ross and Rotimi would dare come together and make a movie if they were not united as international hardworking perfomers?
If you think you have achieved enough as a Tanzanian comic then please think differently because it took 33 years for Coming 2 America new release this means we as Tanzanian Artists have a long way to go and Enemity is not going to help in the growth of the Culture. Stopping a comic from performing in comedy clubs because he performs in another platforms limits growth in comedy as an art in Tanzania and increases enemity which is of no good to the industry. It accelerates loss in focus for upcoming comics because they get hardship on picking sides due to fights they know nothing about. There is a line in the movie that Mirembe says " Every prince promises to do things differently, but eventually, they do things the same way they've always been done before."
Those are the same words most leaders in Tanzania Comedy platforms say "we will do things differently this time". They talk about reforms and making comedy and life of comedians better, but honestly they are Just the Comedy Version of Politicians, being better at feeding people with lies, feeding their stomachs and killing comedy talent differently. Most Upcoming comics in Tanzania are treated like shit and are made to believe that they are part of a family that doesn't consider them as family. They don't have to tell it to you out loud that you don't belong in the family, the treatment speaks much louder than the words.
I think its about time for them so called leaders in comedy platforms, to take action in "growing Tanzania Standup Comedy as an empire with a culture that can live forever for the greater good in standup comedy"If you have watched the movie then I know you all know Lisa's father Mr Cleo Mc Dowell.
I really respect this man's hustle and what I have learned from the character he played in the movie is that, it is possible to change a brand name but not the brand ingridients. Some comics organized themselves and moved from One Comedy brand and made their own brand claiming that they were not well treated and respected, but the funny thing is that they only changed the brand name but not the ingridients of the brand because the treatment they give to the Comics who were not originally present is the same same treatment they ran away from. The lesson am learning here is people can easily be blinded by what happens in the media but the truth is changes in the brand name haven't actually changed the brand behaviours. Because of Parasites.
I really hate parasite because, parasites only think about their own individual benefits and stomachs. A parasite is someone close enough to a person who can make changes but they still support the ridiculous ideas that have always been druging down the growth of something. From the movie I learn that General Izzi had to make an early change but the Nexdorian Lieutenant (Michael Blackson) as a the second in command kept on supporting the ridiculous culture rather than advising the General to make changes for the better future. The Lieutenant was supposed to advice the General on stopping the war because wars cause kingdoms to fall and a lot of blood loss. Just picture a strong bond of unity between Zamunda and Nexdoria.
Everybody taking care of their kingdom but still work together to grow their kingdoms rather than thinking of ways they can take each other Down, but the good thing is that at the end they united and this prooves my point that "Unity takes you places but Enemity drugs you Down". Now getting back to Tanzania, my opinion is, in order for us to change the culture of Comedy we need to get rid of parasites mentality and do things the better way.
And when i say the better way i mean the PUNCHLINE AFRICA way, they didn't pay me to write this but I am pretty sure any one with the right mind and knows the Punchline Africa comedy platform way and culture won't argue to the fact that Evans Bukuku and Ahmed Dahal have really shown comics the real way to Standup comedy and to life of comics as human beings, and if you argue then i wont argue back. The goal of punchline is to grow comedy talent and discipline and they have achieved that in a bigger rate more than other comedy platforms in Tanzania and thats a good example for others to learn. Personally i call Punchline "The Tanzania University of Comedy". This doesn't mean that punchline is perfect but it's close to perfection because every one in the family has the right to be listened to and give out an opinion that will help build Standup comedy culture and the comics.
Tanzania female comics should take and example from Princess Meeka's character. She is fearless, agressive, hard working, relentless, brilliant damn i just don't know how much i can write about her because her character in the movie is one hell of a motivation in life. I know some might say that its just a movie, yeah i know its just a movie, but if Meeka's spirit is put in the real world then its gonna be more than a movie. She earned her place as a Queen the hard way, And i know that is what female comics in Tanzania should do for comedy, They should strike fast and strike hard whenever they are on and off stage. And i promice, if female comics just wait there to get a favour for stage time am sorry to say it ain't going to change the mindset of the male comics who think they are the greatest in Tanzania Comedy. Female comics should just be agressive and stop blaming the sytem on not seeing them, they should make male comics see their presence the hard way.
I know after reading this article some will say I am a hypocrite, well yes I am a hypocrite who learns alot and think in my own way. And also some will say I wrote the article when am High, but I can say is "lets not judge the character but the content of the character". While some will be asking "who does he thinks he is?" "Does he think he is Revolutionary or something?", I am not a Revolutionary i am just a human being with my opinions. I know i am not capable of doing any changes but maybe my words will because we already have people (leaders) with that power to make changes but they are just blinded by fame, greed, favouritism, fear of talents and not accepting advice. They just need a wakeup call with the ringtone "we will do things differently this time" to remind them of the power they hold to change standup comedy culture in Tanzania and make world class Standup Comics.
"You might might think you beat Pharaoh and took the Israelites to Canaan but forget that you have carried Pharaoh's behaviour with you, its not about taking down pharaoh, its about taking down Pharaoh's bad culture and behaviours for the greater good. And this will take Tanzania Standup Comedy world wide". "Remember that Unity takes you places but Enemity drags you Down"
