Historia ya chuo Kikuu cha Dar es Salaama inaanza na Dar-es-Salaam University College iliyoanzishwa siku ya Jumatano tarehe 25 Oktoba mwaka 1961, ikiwa ni miezi mitatu kabla ya uhuru. Wazo la kuanzisha chuo hiki lilikuwa ni la Nyerere aliyekuwa akijiandaa kuongoza serikali ya Tanganyika baada ya uhuru huku akiona wazi kuwa kulikuwa na upungufu mkubwa sana wa wasomi wenye uwezo wa kuongonza ngazi mbalimbali za serikali. Hivyo akaanzisha chuo hiki chini ya udhamini kitengo cha External Programs cha Chuo Kikuu cha London (University of London) kufundisha sheria kwa kufuata mtaala wa Chuo Kikuu cha London, taaluma ambayo ilihitajika sana katika uendeshaji wa serikali wakati huo baada ya uhuru. Chuo hiki kilianza na wanafunzi 13 katika katika jumba ambalo baadaye lilijengwa kuwa ghorofa la Mnazi Mmoja pale mtaa wa Lumumba.
Chini ya udhamini wa University of London, wahitumu wa chuo hicho walikuwa wakitunikiwa digrii za sheria za University of London, yaani LLB(London). Viongozi wa kwanza wa chuo walikuwa ni raia wa Australia A.B Weston ambaye ndiye aliyekuwa Dean wa kwanza akisiadiwa na afisa utawala mwingereza Mr Snaith. Wahadhiri wa kwanza walikuwa ni waingereza watatu: William Twinning, Patrick Mc Auslan na Sol Piccioto, mwamerika mweusi mmoja Mr Pink na mkanada mmoja Cranford Platt. Nadhani wahitimu wa kwanza chini ya Dar es Salaam University College ni pamoja na ama Mark Bomani aliyekuwa mwanasheria mkuu wa kwanza mzalendo au Justice Augustine Saidi aliyekuwa Jaji Mkuu wa kwanza mzalendo, au Julie Manning aliyewahi kuwa waziri wa sheria; sina uhakika sawasawa.
Baada ya nchi zote za Afrika ya mashariki kuwa huru, Nyerere alishauri kuwa colleges za Dar-es- Salaam, Makerere na Nairobi ambazo zote zilikuwa affiliate colleges of University of London ziungane na kuwa chuo kikuu cha afrika ya Mashariki (University of East Africa). Ni kweli wazo hilo lilikubalika na mwaka 1963, ikaundwa University of East Africa ikiwa na Colleges hizo tatu; Makerere University College ikitoa elimu ya tiba na Elimu (Medicine and Education), Nairobi University College ikitoa zaid elimu ya Uhandisi (Engineering) na Dar es Salaama University College ikitoa zaidi elimu ya sheria (Law). Nyerere akawa ndiye mkuu (Chancellor) wa kwanza na wa pekee wa chuo hicho cha East Africa, kwani baada ya yake kilivunjwa. Ndiyo maana wanasheria wengi mashuhuri wa kwanza Afrika mashariki, kwa mfano Francis K. Butagira wa Uganda, walisoma Dar es Salaam; madaktari wengi mahiri, kwa mfano Professor Makene, walisoma Makerere; na wahandisi wengi nguli mfano Professor Mshana walisoma Nairobi.
Mwaka huo wa 1963, Serikali ilihamiisha kampasi ya Dar es Salaam University College kutoka Lumumba kwenda Ubungo eneo linalojulikana leo kama Mlimani. Wakati huo eneo hilo lilikuwa limejitenga sana na sehemu nyingine ya mji, na kuwa na mazingira mazuri ya kusoma bila bugudha. Inaaminika kuwa eneo hilo lilitolewa zawadi kwa Nyerere na mzee mmoja aliyekuwa akilimiliki wakati huo, sina uhakika na stori hiyo. Kwa hiyo kuanzia wakati huo majengo mapya cha Chuo yalianza kujengwa; kuna majengo kama Nkurumah Hall yalijengwa kwa msaada wa serikali ya Ujerumani Magharibi (wakati huo) na majengo kama Hall Two na Hall Five yalijengwa kwa msaada kutoka Israeli, yalijengwa na kampuni iliyojenga Kilimanjaro Hotel (Kempinski leo), ndiyo maana yana muonekano wa kufanana structurally.
Baada ya uhuru, nchi hizi za Afrika ya Mashariki zilijisogeza pamoja kwa kipindi kifupi tu na baadaye zikaanza kutofautiana kidogo kidogo. Kwa mfano mwaka 1966, zilivunja bodi ya sarafu ya Afrika mashariki na kila nchi ikaanzisha benki kuu yake na kutoa sarafu zake. Ni vivyo hivyo kulianza kuwepo kwa figsu kwa Nyerere kuwa anatunuku digrii za Chuo Kikuu cha Afrika ya Mashariki kwa Kenya na Uganda, hivyo kuvunjika kwa University of East Africa na kuanzishwa kwa vyuo vya Makerere University, University of Nairobi, na University of Dar es Salaam. Chuo kikuu cha Dar es Salaama unachojua leo kilianzishwa rasmi kwa sheria ya Bunge namba 12 of 1970 baada ya kuvunjika kwa University of East Africa.

The University of Dar es Salaam Logo is a fundamental expression of the University’s identity.It is the primary element of the University of Dar es Salaam brand identity and must appear on all official University of Dar es Salaam communications. It may not be modified in any way and may not be attached to any graphic element, unless approved by the University Marketing Committee (UMC). An African traditional shaped Logo is divided into two parts. The top part of the shield has a Dutch blue and white wavy background for the ocean, while the bottom is forest green for the land/environment and a book is superimposed on the bottom left for knowledge. A hand holding a crimson torch symbolises reason and learning. At the bottom, the Logo is framed by a sash with the motto Hekima ni Uhuru. The Logo thus represents the University’s deep connections to Dar es Salaam city and its ocean, and its commitment to protecting the grenery environment.
Six symbolic elements in the Logo
(i) The Golden Yellow Shield
The Golden Yellow Shield is an African instrument that symbolises strength, protection and wisdom. The University of Dar es Salaam is a place where freedom of academic expression is nurtured, protected and strengthened.
(ii) The Dutch Blue Ocean waves
The Dark Blue Ocean Waves denote the position of the University of Dar es Salaam within the City of Dar es Salaam which is bordering the Indian Ocean, but more importantly the endless ocean symbolises the no end to academic enquiry. The Dutch blue colour of the ocean depicts majesty and tranquility
(iii) The Forest Green Colour
The Forest Green Colour presents the greenish scenery found at the University of Dar es Salaam as well as the lush greenery environment of the country. Thus, the need to promote and protect the environment is the agenda of the University.
(iv) The Torch
Crimson torch, with a brown handle held by a brown hand, symbolises reason and learning. The torch is tilted slightly forward and the flame backward to convey movement forward. This symbolises that the University of Dar es Salaam is a training institute that generates knowledge that is used to light the path of the society.
(v) The book
The book is a symbol of the University’s enduring commitment to teaching and learning. The University of Dar es Salaam creates, shares, and applies knowledge for the enrichment and betterment of the society.
(vi) Hekima ni Uhuru
Hekima ni Uhuru is the Motto that symbolises the beliefs, ideals and values of the University of Dar es Salaam. That is through the creation and application of knowledge; one is wiser, independent and free. University of Dar es Salaam education provides wisdom that gives one independence and freedom
