Public cautioned on unskilled pharmacists

1st February 2015EmailPrintThe public has been asked to be watchful of the increasing unregistered pharmacies in the country that puts their health and life at risk because of hiring unqualified staff.

Pharmaceutical Society of Tanzania (PST) Secretary General, Geofrey Yambayamba said at the press conference in Dar es Salaam yesterday that most of these unregistered pharmacies are supervised by unprofessional pharmacists.

"The public need to access pharmaceutical services from registered outlet supervised by professionals to avoid health complication resulting from poor medicine administration by unqualified pharmacists" he said.

Yambayamba said such unlicensed drug outlets were putting to shame the pharmaceutical professionals and misleading the public about the credit of such an organisation in the country.

He said efforts should be made to clear the menace and unable foster the growth of the sector based on safe and quality service delivery.

"The public need to develop the habit of purchasing their medicine from registered pharmaceutical services supervised by professionals to avoid health risk that could lead to mortality" he said.

For his part, the PST Vice Chairman Elias Masumbuko said pharmacist owning shops should provide their services in line with fundamentals values and code of the professional conduct.
