Dear readers call me harsh, but I'll do what i have to do. To break to you the process of writing a novel. Only bare bones. No bullshit!!
It takes ten days to do thorough research for a story you have imagined in your head so that it comes near reality. The grind doesn't end there. A lot of brains is required to structure that story into a plot so that the reader understands in deep what you, the writer, is trying to convey.
Be it a fiction or a non fiction, the grind is much or less the same. And that is why i hold a high esteem for the writers and authors for whatever they write. Good or bad. My esteem remains immune! Why?? It is because they have tried. Let's face it, some of you can't even write a few words essay on a topic you have been taught in class, let alone imagining something from scratch. Am not capping, but i have seen students fail to write a 10 words telefax.
And the process still goes on. Unless you can walk around the world regaling people a 6000 words story in your head then you are likely supposed to write down whatever that is in your head. For accuracy. Here it takes 1 quire 4 counterbook to finish a novel sketch. KEY WORD is SKETCH! You can imagine how many days it will take to complete a flawless novel - probably one months and a few weeks, if you have done a thorough research on your idea. And still it doesn't end there. You are going to need more than enough 200 Tsh pens to fill down the pages of a quire 4 counter book!! That's already helluva work there, and the sad news is that it is only the beginning. The worst part follows.
As a professional author you are going to need to go through your novel more than once to make corrections and ammendments to wherever you made mistakes. You are a human, hence mistakes are inevitable. The correction and ammendments process might take what time?? 🤔🤔 Two or so weeks. Whoosh!! I don't know. It depends with the number of mistakes in the novel and your speed for doing the corrections. Here authors are grouped into two: Those who do and take as much time as possible. And those who lose hope because they think their narration is nothing but shit. So they decide to stash it away and begin a new writing. Sad. A lot of good novels die like that. Just like that.
If it happens that you finish with the corrections and you are happy about your narration, you move to the next step. A very crucial step considering the advancement of technology. The step is transferring your hand written words to a more digital format for printing. In developed countries it is easy because of OCR (Optical Character Reader). Back in Tanzania you have to go through typing and since most of writers can't afford buying laptops, they are bound to hiring a typist which is expensive. Or they choose to use their own phones which is a tedious work. Imagine writing 6000 words on a phone screen, let alone the auto-correction shit. Things are tough with writers i tell you.. What they face is dangerous and devastating more than how an erectile dysfunction is to a macho kind of man.
It takes a big heart to be an author. I'll tell you why? It is because after transferring your hand written words into an easier printable format you want to get a publisher. Getting a publisher is not a joke. I repeat getting a publisher is NO JOKE. Most of them give very tough conditions to aspiring writers. Maybe because of the market for books in Tanzania. I don't know! After getting rejected by a publisher, a writer decides to share his work on social media platforms like facebook, whatsapp groups and sorts at his own expense and free of charge except patience from the reader. It is at that moment when he is elated at least people appreciate his hard work that something awful happens. A random lousy person happens. Just a person who starts giving negative comments and opinions about the novel. He becomes a nag and a perpetual kvetch! Sad, he/she goes so far to a point of reviling over nothing .!
