US agency assigns Tanzania higher credit rating than Kenya
MONDAY, MARCH 5, 2018 20:00
BY CONSTANT MUNDA

Global rating agency Moody’s has ranked Tanzania higher than Kenya in credit worthiness.

The US firm has assigned Tanzania a first-time debt issuer rating of B1, a notch higher than Kenya’s B2 after downgrading the latter’s on February 13 because of mounting concerns over a faster pace of new debt accumulation amid sluggish revenue.

Unlike Kenya’s stable outlook thanks to her diversified economy, Moody’s has assigned Tanzania a negative outlook due to unpredictable policy environment, which may hit investments.

That means considerable chances of Tanzania being downgraded to Kenya’s rating band for sovereign credit.

“Uncertainty over the regulatory environment and policy stance of the government, particularly as it relates to the mining sector, could have a long-term negative impact on the country’s growth potential and ability to attract foreign investment,” Moody’s said in a statement on Tanzania’s rating on Monday.

“Even though mining represents only a small share of GDP, the sector is an important source of government revenue and export earnings.”

Kenya’s 7.25 per cent interest on 10-year tranche of $1 billion (Sh101.32 billion) was, for example, higher than Nigeria’s 7.1 per cent on a 12-year $1.25 billion (Sh126.65 billion) bond on February 15 and 6.59 per cent return that Egypt offered on 10-year tranche of its successful $4 billion auction on February 13.

The country is battling fast-maturing debt, with about Sh1 trillion projected in repayments in the next financial year from July.

That is a steep rise from Sh658.23 billion budgeted in the current year that ends in June, and the Sh435.7 billion paid in the year ended June 2017.

I dont think JPM wants commercial loans for now, he is doing fine..Infrastruture is being built and the economy is growing at 7%. Cheaper IMF/WB/ADB Loans will workout just fine

The GoT just told Moody to have carried a work not assigned by GoT!

Its a good indication though, TZ if it realy needs to go for eurobond, it will get it far much cheaper than kenya. Moody is just marketing eurobond to JPM, but if he already has money for stiglers dam, highly unlikely he will borrow from eurozone

JPM if will listen and work on freedom of expression and increase political space, can be one among the best African presidents.

In the same vein, the same Moody ratings report says above of Tanzania. Not that we are glossing over Kenya's verdict but just to point out that in today's world no single country is out of the woods in matters economic.

I have never known why TZ can complain about JPM.. He is single handly killing corruption, building infrastructure and promoting industrialisation. and at the same time avoiding selling tanzania to chinese and european bankers. TZ has high illitracy levels and letting illitrate people to talk as they wish on public podiums is counterproductive. Good thing is that JPM is embarking on quality education, and soon everyone will be knowledgable enough to be allowed to speak sensibly without spewing ignorance on the public podiums. Even europe had limited freedom of expression untill everyone got enough sense to be allowed to criticaly debate the governments work

For once I agree with your sentiments Mkikuyu- Akili timamu! Trouble with Tz is elevating JPM to some pedestal that what he wishes for and says becomes a fiat and law. Stuff that can be institutionalized allowing policy and procedure to be their guiding light are left to one man's ego and whims. Self-critique as a country from top down of leadership is key to all round socio-economic take-off. Kenyans have sharp tongues towards anything unethical even if a knee-jerk solution follows but at least it logs on record that wananchi wamekataa hence future checks and balances.

In kenya its the opposite, Highly educated population(except for pockets of uthamaki ignoramouses) and an illitrate government uncapable of having sound economic and fiscal policies

Why dont you people take your time to first read thru an article and understand....?

It is very misleading statement to say that"Tanzania has high illiteracy rate", Tanzania is among the countries in Africa with good literacy rate, the fact that Kenya has slightly high literacy rate compared to Tanzania, doesn't mean that Tanzania has very high illiteracy.
For example, 2012 Tanzania adult literacy was 67.8%, Kenya(2014), adult literacy was 74%

Back to Magufuli leadership style, it is very dangerous for a leader who has been elected democratically not to follow constitution of the country, it doesn' t matter how good the leader is. People decided to lay down laws and regulations which stipulate how they want to live and be governed, then they gave these laws and regulations to one person whom they have entrusted to guide him/her, then out of the blue, the person decides to choose which ones out of those laws to abide with and which ones to neglect, that is wrong and unacceptable.
