What is Junk Food? Harmful Effects of Eating Junk Food

Junk food refers to a food containing high content of sodium, sugar, fat (contain high levels of calories) and with little amount of vitamins, minerals, proteins etc.

Junk food is nothing but a food with less nutritional values and high content of fat, salt, sugar and high calorie values. Examples for some of junk food are fried chicken outlets, burger outlets, fast food, colas, fried chips, salty snacks etc, which contain high amount of Trans fat, sugar, cholesterol, sodium which are very harm to body.


Harmful Effects of Junk Food:

Food is an essential requirement for human beings to maintain our body in healthy condition. But taking unhealthy food makes our body weak, so choosing correct food which is suitable to our body is more important to maintain good health. Many people due to busy life knowingly they consume junk food which is very harmful to the body. Many studies found that junk food affects the body adversely. Junk food affects both children and adults.

The following are the Effects of eating junk food

1. Increase the risk of Cardiovascular diseases

Junk food is main responsible for heart attacks and many cardiovascular diseases. Junk foods like animal products (meat fat, butter, chicken skin creamy dairy products etc. Contain saturated and trans fats, increase the cholesterol levels which are responsible for many heart diseases.

2. Obesity

Obesity means weighing too much weight (fat) than the normal weight. Obesity comes through an imbalance created by Junk food between energy intake through food and energy spent physical activities. These foods contain high amount of fats, sugars, salts with high calories contribute to overweight. Fast food effect kids badly than adults.

3. Peptic Ulcer:

PUD (peptic ulcer disease) also known as peptic ulcer or stomach ulcer is a break in the coating of small intestine walls. The major symptoms of this ulcer are upper abdominal pain which increases while eating. The main reasons for this ulcer are Diet factors. Diet factors such as spicy intake, alcohol, caffeine increases ulcers risk.

4. Increases the risk of Diabetes:

High levels of simple carbohydrates and sugar in junk food can direct to Type 2 diabetes. Consuming much sugar puts our body metabolism under stress. Our body has to produce extra insulin when you eat high amount of simple carbohydrates and sugar, to prevent blood levels of sugar from dangerous impale. To maintain steady blood levels our body requires proteins and complex Carbohydrates, Junk food doesn’t contain these nutrients, so that your body blood levels will come down, which is main reason for diabetes.

5. Effect on Central nervous system:


Many people addict to junk food without knowingly this is because of junk food effect on central nervous system. Some studies are being made on rats which resulted that junk food consumption alters our brain activity similar to drugs like cocaine and heroin.

In a certain research, rats were given surplus Junk food, the pleasure centers that are present in rats brains became less sensitive, requiring additional food to become responsive. Mwaka huu nimepunguza kiasi kikubwa sana cha processed food. Nimekunywa soda mbili tu mwaka mzima nikiwa ktk sherehe. Ni mwendo wa juisi ya kutengeneza eidha mimi mwenyewe au kwa mpemba fulani anatengeneza juisi matata kabisa ndio nanywa.
Chips nimekula mara nne tena kavu, Nakunywa maji sio ya baridi lita 2 kwa siku na nakula sana matunda ya kununua hasa ndizi.
Mwaka ujao SITAKI ninywe soda kabisa. Kiukweli, namshukuru Mungu, najiona nina afya sana na sijisifii ila nikisimama na watu wa umri wangu wananionea gere nilivyo.
