In a recent statement, the company said the company has 250 Vietnamese employees and 1,400 locals providing services through an 18,000km optical cable system to the country’s remote areas.

In a report to President Truong Tan Sang who was in the country last week, Viettel said it has successfully launched its services in the country through Halotel.

President Sang commended the company for doing a commendable job. He said Tanzania has initially recorded major achievements in attracting foreign resources and producing goods in service of export to neighbouring countries.

He therefore said Vietnam stands ready to share its experience with the country to towards achieving success in any field.

Treasuring the good sentiments of Tanzanian ministries and agencies towards Vietnam’s military-run telecom group Viettel since its start-up days in Africa, Sang expressed his belief that the first project launched by the company will help lure more Vietnamese investors to the special economic zone.

Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Charles Mwijage said during 2002-2006, the government introduced various policies to boost the development of export and special processing zones and created a legal framework to facilitate the operation of private enterprises.

“Domestic and foreign firms have poured over US$1.3 billion into the processing zones, focusing on textiles, mining and farm produce processing, generating jobs for 36,000 labourers,” Mwijage said.

He said the government is expecting to roll out such models on a large scale and woo more foreign investors, including those from Vietnam.

The Benjamin Mkapa Special Economic Zone houses many important industrial facilities including plants manufacturing SIM cards for Viettel’s Halotel mobile network.

Noting his admiration for Vietnam’s economic achievements, the host said Tanzania and the semi-autonomous islands of Zanzibar in particular are keen to learn from the Southeast Asian country’s experience in rice cultivation, aquaculture and seafood processing.
