Kenya Ports Authority has today acquired one new Ship to Shore (STS) Gantry Crane and eight Rubber Tyred Gantry (RTG) Cranes to boost efficiency and productivity at the Port of Mombasa.General Manager Engineering Services Eng. Rashid Salim who received the equipment on behalf of the Managing Director Mrs. Catherine Mturi-Wairi, said this was the first consignment of the four (STS) and 12 RTGs ordered by the Authority from Japan at a total cost of Ksh 6.68 Billion.Today’s new arrivals brings the total number of RTG cranes at the Port of Mombasa to 46 and STSs to 13, which means that the movement of import containers from the berths (and export containers to the berth) will be more efficient.Four more RTG cranes will be delivered next month bringing the total to 50. The other three STS cranes are under construction and will be delivered in 2021 bringing the total of STS cranes to 16.The cost of one STS is Kshs 947 million while each RTG costs Kshs 185 million."Today we are receiving the first consignment of the cranes. We expect the second shipment in May this year," said Eng. Salim.He said the new equipment will be deployed at the Second Container Terminal which has been operational since April 2016 to increase off -take of cargo at the Port. The new STS main features include; capacity to lift two 20 foot containers in one move, safe working load (65 tons), ability to handle ships up to 18 containers (45 meters across), advance crane monitoring system while the RTG has a hybrid power system which results into improved fuel efficiency of up to 50 percent and reduced carbon emissions.It also has an advanced crane monitoring system, automatic steering and is also installed with accurate container load weighing system.The equipment comes at a time when the Authority is undertaking massive infrastructural developments and port capacity expansion programmes aimed at improving operational efficiency.Continued here: Error

hata ukitafta article ya 2050 upate bado mtindo ndio huo huo..hakuna kilichobadilika😀😀😀...unless unataka kuniambia durban is not the largest port leo ikafuatwa na akina Tangier, Said, Mombasa Djibouti, Luanda na kadhalika

Labda mli mobilise vifaa vyote bandarini kushuhulikia hio meli ili muweke rekodi, Lakini Mombasa huvunja rekodi ikiwa ni siku ya kawaida tu.

Kwa bandari zenye zimeweza kupitisha (hapa tunaongelea hesabu ya mizigo yote kwa mwaka) average speed ya kushusha/kupakia over 30 container per hour , babdari ya Dar haionekani. Mombasa iko top 5 at avg speed ya 38 TEUs per hour
 


Using that average growth (2007-2016) of 6.2% for tonnage and 7.2% for TEUs, by 2030 we should be handling 2.9 million TEUs or 62 Million tonnes, At some point Mombasa port wont be able to expand beyond its space, therefore its important that Lamu port not only connect to new markets like Ethiopua, south sudan but also make sure it connects to markets already served by Mombasa port Iin order to ensure Mombasa will never be ooverwhelmed
