In Summary

  • Cabinet minister Mohamed Elmi, Transport Assistant minister Hassan Joho and deputy Speaker Farah Maalim were among Muslim leaders present at the meeting that took place at Mr Odinga's Karen home in Nairobi

Muslim preachers from all 47 counties on Sunday threw their weight behind Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a day after he was endorsed as the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy presidential candidate.

Led by Sheikh Mohammed Warfa, the clerics vowed to support Mr Odinga's bid for the presidency, saying the premier had been steadfast in the fight for equity and justice.

"You have been at the forefront in fighting for equity and justice for the marginalised. That is why we have decided to give you 100 per cent support", Mr Warfa said.

The clerics told Mr Odinga to fully implement the Constitution if elected president, arguing that this would solve the problems of inequality in the country.

Cabinet minister Mohamed Elmi, Transport Assistant minister Hassan Joho and deputy Speaker Farah Maalim were among Muslim leaders present at the meeting that took place at Mr Odinga's Karen home in Nairobi.
Mr Odinga assured Muslims that his government would ensure equitable distribution of resources and fight insecurity.

He also promised to expand the infrastructure in northern Kenya to open up the region for trade and other development opportunities.

"I have listened to the four main issues you have raised which are implementing the Constitution, tackling insecurity, employment and equitable distribution of resources. I can assure you that we have the answer which is full implementation of the Constitution", said Mr Odinga.

Mr Odinga hit out at his rivals in the Jubilee alliance, saying they cannot be trusted to implement the new laws. "They did not want the new Constitution and cannot be trusted to implement it," he stated.

Personally, would love to see Raila Jaramogi Oginga Odinga in da house!:violin:

Kujitoa kwa musalia kwenye jubilee na kuundika kwenye pambazuka alliance inaharibu matumaini ya raila kuingia ikulu. practically zile kura ambazo raila atapata ni za kule ukambani sana ,kwa kuwa rift valley ametupa bloc. the contest is going to be a fair one.

A section of Muslims on Monday distanced themselves from their leaders’ endorsement of Prime Minister Raila Odinga as the ultimate presidential front-runner.

They said voting was an individual decision and the PM should not to be misled.

Speaking in Nairobi, Muslim Youth chairman Issa Ahmed Issa said the purported endorsement should not be understood to mean all Muslims would rally behind Mr Odinga in the March 4 election.

“Some clerics purported to talk on behalf of all Muslims but let me tell you that when we saw these clerics cum businessmen we were surprised and shocked…” Mr Ahmed said.

Cheap gimmick

“These people went there as individuals, just like in 2007 when we were told of an MOU whose contents we never got to know,” he said.

The Supreme Council Of Kenya Muslims (Supkem) also dismissed the endorsement as “a cheap political gimmick aimed at herding the Muslims to support Raila.”

This season will be more of falsehoods.

This is the right thing to do. Bravo Muslims, one should not try to polarize the country through religion.

ao viongoz wanaomuunga mkono raila ni wanafki na wapo kimaslai ila atawafanyia kama balala.na wampigishe takbil adi atoe mate ili watumie katiba yao ya mashoga na walevi

If politics has some dirty games and when religious groups started playing it,the future of democracy and unity in East Afrika is not promising!

I think the parliament should come up with a decree that religious leaders should not come openly campaign for anyone on cameras. Politicians have been known to extend their hegemony through these institutions.

The Muslim Leaders Forum on Sunday endorsed the Coalition for Reform and Democracy (Cord) led by Prime Minister Raila Odinga and Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka.

The forum leaders told journalists in Nairobi that Cord's leadership "could be trusted to serve Kenyans with honour and integrity."

"After careful examination of the choices on offer for the presidency and the alliances established, the Muslim Leaders Forum has identified Cord as the most suitable team to take up the mantle of leading Kenyans to the next level," the forum's national coordinator Farouk Machanje said.

Mr Machanje, accompanied by top leaders of the forum said Mr Odinga "espouses aspirations of the Kenyan people for good and sound leadership."

"This has been epitomised in his consistent struggles against dictatorship, tribalism, corruption, and other ills that have bedevilled Kenya over the years," he said at a press conference in Laico Regency hotel.

But an earlier endorsement by the group in December last year was received with criticism from a section of Muslim youth who said the leaders could not compel them to vote for particular candidates.

However, the forum said it only offered direction and advice on good leadership to the Muslim constituency in Kenya, and did not wish to dictate upon members which way to vote.

The leaders hit out at the Jubilee coalition led by Deputy Prime Minister Uhuru Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto citing the failure to implement an agreement recently signed with Deputy Prime Minister Musalia Mudavadi to allow him lead the coalition.

"If Mr Mudavadi with whom the Jubilee had signed an agreement in the presence of lawyers could be bamboozled, dropped and the MoU discarded, it gives Kenyans an inkling of the type of leaders in the Jubilee coalition," he added.

The forum also said leaders of the Jubilee coalition campaigned against the Constitution and if they were given chance to lead the country; they would reverse the achievements of the new law because they did not believe in it during the referendum in 2010.

"The Constitution, which Kenyans placed a great premium on, needs a strong soldier who believes in it to implement," Mr Machanje said.

On the indictment of the duo at the International Criminal Court, the forum's national coordinator said: "Given a choice between saving their skins and governing, priority will of course be given to the former."

"Kenyans won't buy the ‘governance by remote control from the Hague' argument."

At the same time, the forum did not adequately answer why the choice of other presidential contenders as Prof James Ole Kiyiapi, Martha Karua, Peter Kenneth and Mr Mudavadi was not endorsed.

"We strongly believe the presidency of Mr Odinga will move the nation to the next level after the March 4 elections," Sheikh Khalfan Khamis said.

There are so many African governments on remote control and it is good that currently kibaki has gone to ask a few of this governments to pledge their support for regional cooperation. Countries like DRC has tried for a long time to develop by being remotely controlled and they have failed miserably. Rwanda was on course of being controlled until something went wrong.

Take the Rwandese case study, the west/America has been funding their judicial reforms and the outcome is as usual, kagame is using the judiciary to practice repression among opposition leaders, yet that is not a human's right crime!
So long as the west can dictate and African government act in according to their dictates, that is good "international reputations"
