Man faces series of drug, rape charges

AN IT engineer Shaban Mjema (30) a resident of Kimara Rombo was yesterday arraigned before Kinondoni Resident magistrate court facing two cases of drugging women in order to steal from them.
In the first case Mjema is charged with three counts of stupefying in order to commit an offence, stealing and rape. The police prosecutor Ms Braina John told the court that Mjema is alleged to have committed the crime at Manzese Tip Top area in Dar es Salaam.
On the first count Mjema is alleged on August 11, this year at about 12:45 pm with the intention to commit an offence of stealing and rape did drug a thirty four year old woman.
It is further alleged that on that fateful day the accused had met his victim and offered her biscuits which are alleged to have been drugged. On the second count it is alleged that on August 9, 2010 at about 12:50 pm at the same area the accused stole two gold rings and a mobile phone both valued at 325,000/- after drugging the thirty four year old victim.
On the second count it is alleged that Mjema at about one in the afternoon at the same area did rape the woman. The accused entered a not guilty plea but was remanded after failing to present two sureties. Resident Magistrate Benedicta Beda adjourned the case to September 8 this year for another mention.
Meanwhile, in the second case Mjema was charged with the same three counts and according to the police prosecutor Mr Edewin Nyagabona the offences were committed at Shekilango area in the citys suburbs. On the first count the police prosecutor alleged that on August 10, 2010 at unknown time Mjema did drug a woman in order to steal and rape her.
On the second count on August 14, 2010 at about 7:30 am at the same area Mjema is alleged to have stolen from the woman two gold chains, two gold rings, two mobile phones all worth a total of 833,000/-. On the third count it is alleged that on the same date, time and place Mjema had unlawful carnal knowledge of the woman.
Mjema denied all the charges before Resident Magistrate Enediana Makwaba but was remanded after failing to bring two sureties and the case was adjourned to September 9, 2010 for another mention.
