World Cup 2018: Thousands of England fans sign petition for Gareth Southgate to be knighted after incredible run to semi-finals in Russia
They may not be bringing the trophy 'back home', but the Three Lions whipped up a national frenzy this summer

GARETH SOUTHGATE could be set to become a 'sir' after thousands of people signed an online petition.
England were knocked out of the World Cup at the semi-final stage after a 2-1 extra-time defeat to Croatia.
But Southgate and his young squad have put passion back into playing for the shirt, and the nation was well and truly whipped into a frenzy.
There are now calls for the waistcoat-wearing 47-year-old to receive a knighthood for his sterling work.
So far 6,000 people have signed the petition, with the original target of 7,500 signatures well within sight.
The petition reads: "We may have just been knocked out by Croatia, but the Three Lions are coming back with their heads held high after reaching the semi-finals for the first time since 1990.
"Gareth deserves a knighthood for what he’s done. And this is why.
"He has single-handedly turned our the national team that forever let us down into something that England can be proud of.
"No more pampered prima donnas who only seem to be thinking of their next pay-cheque from the Premier League paymasters
"No more ridiculous scapegoating to cover up poor performances.

In the aftermath of the last-gasp loss to Croatia, SunSport reported how mild-mannered Southgate delivered a rousing speech praising his players ahead of the third-place play-off against Belgium.
Southgate said: "I don't think people fully understood the players (previously). They care. They care about playing for their country. They have real humility.
"They're on their way to being top players but they're not there yet but we can see we're progressing and really heading in the right direction.
"It's nice to be appreciated but it's about the team. It's about creating an environment to be best we can be, a professional culture.
"We've made a difference to people's happiness the last few weeks."
