Police in Lyantonde District are hunting for assailants who shot three family members in Kaliiro Sub County on Sunday night.

Francis Rwabagabo, 60 and his wife Kellen Nakato,38 were shot inside their home in Kaliiro Township at around 9pm. Hours later, the assailant raided Rwabagabo’s in-law Leokadia Kizza’s home at Kaliiro III Village, located two kilometres away and also shot her dead.

Residents suspect one of Rwabagabo’s sons only identified as Mwebaze, an army deserter to be behind the attack.

“He [Mwebaze] has been having a misunderstandings with his step mother (Nakato) accusing her of having bewitched his mother who died recently. And when he [Mwebaze] raided the home, he shot Nakato and when the father emerged from the bedroom to see what had happened, he was also shot,” John Zziwa, a resident and speaker Kaliiro Sub County said.

Mr Zziwa said a few hours after the shooting, Mwebaze who occasionally visits the village was spotted at a mobile money shop belonging to Godfrey Kawooya in the same trading centre.

“Four hours later, we also received information that Kizza, 48, had also been gunned down,” he said.

Kawooya said by time Mwebaze came to his mobile money shop, the latter was holding a gun and wearing a military camouflage.

By the time of filing this story, the couple’s bodies had been taken to Lyantonde Mortuary for autopsy while that of Kizza was still lying inside her house. She was staying alone in the house.

Mr Zziwa said Mwebaze is on wanted list of Kaliiro Sub County security committee after he was linked to murder of three family members in the neighbouring Kinuuka Sub County, Lyantonde District last month .

“[Mwebaze] has become a security threat in this area and I ask police to work with other security agencies to swiftly arrest him before he kills other people,” he said.

Southern Regional Police spokesperson, Mr Paul Kangave said investigations into the shooting have started.

“Our teams are already at the scenes and have recovered 11 cartridges; eight of them from Rwabagabo’s house. They are still gathering more information from residents. I am sure we are going to get to the bottom of this,” he said on Monday.
