Hospital visits unrelated to COVID-19 still led to thousands of people contracting the deadly virus in the United States last year, alarming new data revealed.
The data, released by the Kaiser Health News nonprofit, says more than 10,000 confirmed COVID cases originated in hospitals in 2020, with the organization suspecting the actual total is higher.
A whopping 21% of the cases that began in hospitals between April and September that year ended in death, according to KHN.
One woman, identified as Cindy Johnson, believes her husband may have become infected with coronavirus by a staff member at the Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, Fla., before he died.
She called it “appalling” that hospital employees aren’t required to be vaccinated.
“How can they say on their website ... that the safety precautions ‘we’ve put into place make our facilities among the safest possible places to receive healthcare at this time’?” Johnson told KHN. Her husband caught the virus in November 2020.
The United States has recorded more than 46 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, and more than 750,000 deaths from the virus, since the start of the pandemic — more than any other country has reported, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.
