THE World Bank has expressed its intention to assist Tanzania in the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) Isaka- Rusumo section and Rwanda’s section from Rusumo border to Kigali, along with other transport infrastructure such as roads to help promote business and social welfare as a whole.

This was revealed in Washington DC by Minister for Finance and Planning, Dr Philip Mpango, after discussions with the institution’s experts. Dr Mpango said other regional projects that the institution had shown interest to support include environment and rehabilitation of Lake Victoria ports of Mwanza, Musoma, as well as the ones in Lake Tanganyika, to facilitate transportation to Burundi and Congo.

“These regional and national projects that the World Bank plans to implement with the government of Tanzania in the next financial year will ensure that they are sustainable as they affect all countries surrounding the two lakes,” he said. He further explained that it was similarly important to effect environmental pollution control for the people in the region as well as Tanzania to continue to benefit from the major lakes.

In addition, he said the World Bank had also expressed its intention to finance the Rufiji power project in the Rufiji River, which is expected to produce 3000 megawatts. “Electricity is very important for industrial development because an industrial economy cannot grow without reliable power supply,” the minister said. Furthermore, the institution had agreed to assist Tanzania to provide training on project analysis to spare the government getting into more big debts.

The minister explained that lack of effectiveness in analysing projects financed by mortgage loans would lead to a debt burden for the country, and so, Tanzania would ensure all projects were analysed properly.

In every budget we we do here butter and bread plans which at the end of the financial yea a lot of excuses arises. Many budgets has been polished with a lot of promising figures, promises and commitment but at the end all dies drastically. So if this is the case and there would be real interests proper commitments, then the projects will be a big step ahead to lay industrial economy infrastructure.. otherwise we will be having day dreams.

Real Tanzanian speaking. I agree with you. Plans mean nothing if there is no project on the ground. i want Tanzania to prosper but hiyo haiwezi fanyika kwa maneno mazito mazito pekee bila vitendo.

Kenyan SGR is a sound comparable project, coz they are all in the same region, running from world market getway to up country, same design, same period or implemented within the same decade, but differ in mode of financing or capital structure.
I think you got the picture why it's a good comparable.

3% WB Loan Shared Btw RW&Tz with vs Kenya SGR loan given at 8% by shylock chinese banks😀
comprehension straight out of mbagala alliance secondary school. Has the world bank offered any loan for that 'air' project or what do you understand by "expressed intention to assist tanzania"??
btw, mleta mada mbona haku post na comments pia from original source?? hizi hapa mjione sio upuzi wa wana fisi-em

what are you comparing the Kenyan sgr to? that's my question.
and btw don't try to be smart, naona vile umeingiza "or implemented within the same decade" chini ya maji😱😀😀😀 that shows even you don't believe in the tz-sgr bullshit!

"expressed intention" Means that WB has been knocking at JPM and Kagame's offices trying to get an appointment to discuss funding. JPM&Kagame can either accept, negotiate down the intrest rate to 1.5% or zero(Grant). This is unlike kenya where WB flatly refused to fund the SGR and called it "uneconomical" despite high level meetings or "begging" by Uhuru Kenyatta 😀
