This week's thought revolves about a policy debate on industrialisation. While the ruling party's government, under the leadership of Dr Magufuli, has embarked on industrilisation stratigies anchored in improving, strengthening and expanding the country's infrastructure i.e. road network, railway, air and marine transport, the opposition see it as a worst of national resource and a non-start ambition.

It is true that you cannot industrialise if the infrastructure is in dear need. You would be stuck with the movement of raw materials and finished goods at least cost and time.

While all political parties agree that one of the drivers of economic growth is industrialisation, how do we go about it?

It should be noted that so far, Tanzania industrialisation has been characterised by shifts in roles of thes state and the private sector. A number of industries were established and run by the state, during Mwl Nyerere's era. Then with global economic policy changes (globolisation - free market economy), the state run industries were privatised. Most these were turned into godowns and the country was left subjected to imported goods, mostly inferior in quality.

The infrastructure of the country has also not improved at an appreciable pace, despite of the efforts of past government in rehabilitating some of the regional roads. However, many a number of districts do still have unreliable access networks, though they excell in agricultural production e.g. Mbeya and Rukwa regions.

Thought of the week, Is infrastructure development a viable strategy towards industrialisation?
