South africa has become the first country in the world to introduce ATM-like machines that dispense Medicine instead of money.
South Africa being the first country to use pharmacy dispensing units - the health organization, 'Right to Care' which is a non-profit helps the national health department to install and maintain the machines, which are funded by the German and United States government.
Now most patients can collect their ARV's from a pharmacy dispensing unit in a shopping centre. People wait for hours for their pills at the clinic, now with these machines; waiting time has been cut down from 12 hours to three Minutes. (Delwyn Verasamy, M&G).
Pharmacy Dispensing units allow patients to talk to on-screen pharmacists, should they experience any side effects from their treatment.
Alexandra and Diepsloot are the two selected pilot areas where these machines are installed and operating. They chose these two areas because of the size of their populations, and also to ensure that good results and effectiveness of the PDU project is observed properly.
They chose these locations because they are underserved communities and their focus used to be on high-density urban areas because of the cost of capitalizing the project.
If people can get their medication from an ATM-like machine, the spread of COVID-19 will decrease drastically.
Well Done, South Africa.
